Alberto churns inland, spreading rain widely

A flood watch is expected for South Florida on Saturday morning as a result of Subtropical Storm Alberto

In Maryland, searchers on Monday found the body of a man swept away when a flash flood triggered by a separate storm tore through the main street of a historic town.

Since May 15, the Triad has received about 3 inches of rain as recorded at Piedmont Triad International Airport, said Phil Badgett, a weather service meteorologist in Raleigh.

The soggy remnants of Alberto are spreading rain deeper into the nation's midsection after downing trees, after triggering power outages and scattered flooding around the South.

Forecasters said rain could still kill people caught in flash floods in the coming hours or days in Alabama and large areas of Georgia, Tennessee and the Carolinas.

Alberto was more of a rainstorm than a wind threat, but the National Weather Service said at least one tornado had been confirmed. And while forecasters said the subtropical depression could dump several inches (centimeters) of rain inland, few major problems have been reported so far.

Rain and wind will begin subsiding between 6 PM and 8 PM.

Lava threatens more wells at Hawaii geothermal plant

The risk of flooding is not as significant in Forsyth and Guilford counties, and in areas east and south of the Triad, Adkins said. The flooding was the second time Ellicott City had been devastated by high water in two years.

As we reported on Tuesday, a local news crew - a reporter and photographer - were killed in North Carolina while covering the storm when a tree fell on their vehicle.

After Alberto's passage, Royal Dutch Shell Plc was sending workers back to the eastern Gulf of Mexico and Chevron Corp restored some production on Monday.

Alabama Power Co. said about 20,000 homes and businesses were without electricity Tuesday, most in the Birmingham area.

They had just interviewed Tryon Fire Chief Geoffrey Tennant as they covered storms in North Carolina. The men died instantly, their vehicle's engine still running, he said.
