China says it's ready to fight back after United States revives tariffs

White House slaps 25% tariff on $50 billion worth of Chinese goods

This after the US decided on Tuesday that it will impose a hefty 25-percent tariff on 50-billion dollars' worth of Chinese goods containing "industrially significant" technology.

China on Wednesday hit back at the White House saying it is "reckless" to renew tariff threats.

The final list of Chinese imports covered by the tariffs list will be announced June 15 and imposed shortly thereafter, while the proposed investment restrictions and enhanced export controls will be announced by June 30, according to the White House.

The declaration of further sanctions had been expected last week but was apparently delayed.

Rifts over the direction of trade policy in the White House have created confusion about the U.S.'s future relations with partners from China to the European Union.

China said last month that it would respond to the U.S. tariff threat with similar measures on $50 billion of American exports, including aircraft, automobiles and soybeans.

More recently, the two countries have seemed to signal an appetite for de-escalation.

China on Wednesday lambasted "sudden flip-flops" in United States policy after President Donald Trump said he was moving to finalize trade sanctions against it - even as a USA delegation arrived in Beijing for talks.

"We on the Chinese side do not want to fight but are not afraid to fight a trade war", she said.

The commerce ministry said earlier Wednesday that Beijing "has the confidence, capability and experience to defend the interests of Chinese people and the core interests of the country" - no matter what measures the USA plans to take. "We lost the trade war long ago" with deals such as Nafta and China's entry into the World Trade Organization, he said.

After a second round of talks in Washington earlier this month, . the USA and China issued a joint statement vowing not to launch a trade war against each other, .as Beijing agreed to "significantly increase" its purchases of American goods and services to reduce its massive trade deficit with the U.S.

In the same statement on Tuesday, the White House said that the US will "continue to pursue litigation at the World Trade Organization" over allegations that China steals USA intellectual property. On Monday, representatives of the two countries met at the WTO, where, Reuters reports, the us said Chinese laws allow Chinese countries to demand technology-sharing from foreign firms that want to do business.

"What we're having with China is a trade dispute, plain and simple", Navarro said in an interview broadcast Wednesday with National Public Radio.

China, meanwhile, has filed its own WTO dispute against the US, over Trump's earlier tariff proposals.
