Zinedine Zidane Steps Down As Real Madrid Coach After Champions League Treble

"This team must keep winning, and it needs a change after three years, another voice, another method of working". But he knows I wanted him as a player and as a manager.

"That's why I've taken that decision". Or at least one man who the fans want to take it on...

Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane announced at an unscheduled press conference on Thursday that he will be stepping down as the manager of the glamorous club.

"Of course it can be a "see you later" (rather than goodbye) because Madrid has given me everything".

Madrid finished 18 points behind Barcelona in La Liga this season but salvaged their campaign in stunning style, beating Liverpool in to win the Champions League.

Zidane has won three Champions League trophies since taking over from Rafael Benitez in January 2016 as well as a league title in 2016/17.

A club statement read: "Zinedine Zidane will appear before members of the press today, Thursday 31st May, at 1:00pm CEST in the Real Madrid City press room".

Just five days after becoming the first manager in history to win a third consecutive Champions League, Zinedine Zidane shocked the global sports world by announcing that he has resigned as Real Madrid manager in a surprise press conference on Thursday in Madrid.

"I am doing this for the good of this team, for this club". Zidane coached 149 games for the club, the most since Jose Mourinho's 178 from 2010 to 2013.

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino is a strong contender to take over at the Bernabeu, but he signed a new long-term contract at Tottenham earlier this week. "About what comes next, is not for me to say", said Zidane.
