President mulls commuting Blagojevich's term, pardoning Stewart

Trump pardons Dinesh D’Souza, conservative agitator who pleaded guilty to campaign finance fraud

On Thursday, President Donald Trump pardoned shrill right-wing author Dinesh D'Souza and also said he is considering commuting Blagojevich's 14-year sentence and pardoning Martha Stewart.

The filmmaker, author and speaker was sentenced in September 2014 in federal court in NY to five years of probation after he admitted making illegal contributions to a U.S. Senate candidate in NY. He was thereafter sentenced to eight months in a halfway house near his home in San Diego and five years of probation.

"I think to a certain extent Martha Stewart was harshly and unfairly treated", Trump said, according to a pool report (per The New York Times).

"The president said, 'Dinesh, you've been a great voice for freedom, ' and he said that, 'I got to tell you man-to-man, you've been screwed", D'Souza told Fox.

President Donald Trump said he is considering commuting the sentence of ex-Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich and pardoning Martha Stewart.

Stewart, in 2004, was convicted on four counts of obstruction of justice and lying to investigators about selling her stock in ImClone in 2001, a day before the stock tumbled when regulators rejected the company's application for a cancer drug. Also, then-U.S. attorney Patrick Fitzgerald, a longtime friend of Comey, prosecuted the case.

None of the clemencies that Trump has granted have come through the front door of the Justice Department's Office of the Pardon Attorney, which typically assists the president in exercising his pardon power.

D'Souza pleaded guilty in 2014 to campaign finance fraud, after a prosecution headed by Preet Bharara, then the US attorney for Manhattan.

Trump also said he is considering commuting the sentence of former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich, a Democrat who tried to sell President Barack Obama's former US senate seat.

Former US attorney Preet Bharara defended D'Souza's conviction on Thursday.

As Simon Malloy of Media Matters pointed out, D'Souza himself admitted that was not "treated unfairly" by the court after he copped to knowingly violating campaign finance law by using his assistant and mistress as "straw donors".

Bharara, in a tweet, denied any political influence took place: "The facts are these: D'Souza intentionally broke the law, voluntarily pled guilty, apologized for his conduct & the judge found no unfairness. The career prosecutors and agents did their job".

Blagojevich and Stewart also appeared on versions of Trump's former reality show "The Apprentice".

"These guys decided to make an example of me", D'Souza said.

Some fellow conservatives, however, cheered Trump's move, including Sen.

D'Souza is the latest controversial right-wing figure to get a reprieve from the president.
