Facebook Is Killing Off Its Trending News Section

Facebook said that the module accounted for less than 1.5% of the clicks to news publishers and that internal research said people found "the product to be less and less useful".

The Facebook logo is seen at the Nasdaq MarketSite in New York's Times Square.

The Trending section has also been mired in controversy. Ultimately, the tool appears to have created more headaches for Facebook than it was actually worth to the company. The backlash from conservatives led Facebook chief executive Mark Zuckerberg to extend an olive branch, holding a meeting at his company headquarters with more than two dozen conservative figures including Glenn Beck, Dana Perino and Tucker Carlson.

The section will be removed from Facebook next week, the company said Friday.

The section, which appears to the right of the main news feed on the desktop and in search on mobile, has been a lightning rod for criticism nearly since its launch in 2014.

Facebook's head of news products, Alex Hardiman, said the company is still committed to real-time news.

Former Houston Rockets' star Mario Elie kicks off Game 7
Neither heart nor Harden nor game contributions from Clint Capela (20 points and nine rebounds), Eric Gordon (23 points) and P.J. The Rockets played themselves out of the playoffs and they did it by lazily launching 3-pointers instead of attacking the paint.

"We introduced Trending in 2014 as a way to help people discover news topics that were popular across the Facebook community", Hardiman wrote.

Breaking News Label: A test we're running with 80 publishers across North America, South America, Europe, India and Australia lets publishers put a "breaking news" indicator on their posts in News Feed. It addressed fake news accusations by adding new labels and working with third-party groups to review the veracity of stories posted on the site.

"There are other ways for us to better invest our resources", Hardiman said.

In 2016, a report alleged that Facebook employees.

Another feature, called "Today In", shows people breaking news in their area from local publishers, officials and organizations.

The changes arrive at a time when Facebook has been held accountable for allowing the spread of fake news across its network, and it has responded with a host of fake news-fighting features like fact checking, adding publisher context, the addition of related articles, shrinking fake news in the News Feed, and other initiatives. Facebook Watch will soon have a dedicated section for live news coverage.
