[Newsmaker] Declaration of end to Korean War possible in Singapore

Kim Jong-un

Earlier, President Trump said talks between Pompeo and Kim Yong Chol had been going well, and that he hoped to hold a summit with Kim Jong Un in Singapore on the originally scheduled date of June 12.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and a senior North Korean official met in New York Wednesday as both sides push to salvage a highly anticipated summit between their leaders.

The ceremonial arrival represents a propaganda coup for a regime that has endured decades of isolation, and raises the possibility that the summit between Trump and Kim Jong-un will go ahead in Singapore on 12 June or soon after. "I think, we will have a very positive result in one meeting", the president said. "But oftentimes that's not the way deals work", Trump said. "But it'll get done at some point".

But Kim is under USA sanctions for his alleged role in North Korea's nuclear program and other illicit activities, including the 2010 sinking of a South Korean warship that killed 46 sailors. Former North Korean military spymaster Kim Yong Chol arrived at the White house in a black SUV at 1:11 pm and was greeted by Trump's chief of staff, John Kelly.

After exchanging threats and insults since Trump became president a year ago, the United States and North Korea have been trying to set up the summit between their leaders.

His comments will stoke fears that the tempestuous relationship between Mr Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un could yet spiral into World War 3.

"You people are going to have to travel, because you'll be in Singapore on June 12th", he told reporters awaiting word of the meeting. Trump suddenly withdrew from the meeting last week, only to announce a day later that it could still get back on track.

Amid all these things, Lavrov added an air of mystery to the meeting by presenting Kim Jong-un with a mysterious box, leaving everyone guessing about its contents, as per a report from Russia Today.

Top North Korean general on way to U.S. ahead of summit
The second meeting between Kim and Moon in as many months reflects urgency among both men to maintain momentum for diplomacy. South Korean news agency Yonhap said Gen Kim Yong-chol was due to arrive in the United States on Wednesday, via Beijing .

Before meeting with Trump, Kim, who is now a target of US sanctions, spent Wednesday and Thursday with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in NY.

Despite saying the two sides made "real progress", Pompeo also cautioned that there might be no quick solution. They can make a strategic shift, one that their country has not been prepared to make before. "It should not be to anyone's surprise that there will be moments along the way, that this won't be straightforward", he said.

However, questions remain about what a deal on the North's nuclear weapons would look like. Trump's main goal in any talks is to eliminate that threat. Kim Yong Chol is the highest-level North Korean official to visit the U.S. in 18 years.

"The potential summit between @POTUS and Chairman Kim presents #DPRK with a great opportunity to achieve security and economic prosperity", Pompeo tweeted shortly before the meeting began.

"I don't even want to use the term "maximum pressure" anymore, because we're getting along", the president said.

There had been speculation in the South Korean media that Gen. Kim would be carrying a letter for Mr. Trump to respond to the one the president sent to the North Korean leader last week. Trump had withdrawn from the summit on May 24 with a strongly worded letter of his own, citing "tremendous anger and open hostility" by Pyongyang but also urged Kim to call him.

It was a extraordinary softening of tone toward North Korea from a president who a year ago threatened to rain "fire and fury" on the country because of the threat its nuclear weapons and long-range missiles pose to the United States.
