Italy's New Populist and Anti-Establishment Government Is Sworn In

Matteo Salvini leader of the League speaks to the press on 14 May

Earlier, Salvini joined Premier Giuseppe Conte and the rest of the newly sworn-in Cabinet to view the Republic Day parade.

Conte selected economics professor Giovanni Tria for the role of finance minister after he resigned on Monday when Mattarella refused to approve Conte's original nomination of Paolo Savona. The ceremony took place in Rome.

Speaking in the town of Pozzallo, he said: "Italy and Sicily can not be Europe's refugee camp".

As the leader of the right-wing League, one of the two populist parties represented in the Italian Cabinet sworn in Friday, Salvini was known for xenophobic rhetoric.

Salvini said it was "shameful" that Soros was invited to speak at the conference.

Di Maio, who pledged to give needy Italians a basic income, takes over as economic development minister, while Salvini heads the interior ministry, the key position to enforce his pledge to expel hundreds of thousands of migrants.

President Sergio Mattarella signs the list of new cabinet ministers to be led by PM Giuseppe Conte.

Mr Salvini, who will not be attending as he will be in Italy's parliament for a confidence vote on the new coalition with M5S, has condemned this rule as unfairly burdening Mediterranean countries and leading to "an obvious imbalance in management, numbers and costs".

Italian bonds gained on Thursday after the news of the Five Star-League deal, with the 10-year yield falling about 18 basis points to 2.7% before rising again to 2.8%.

A crowd of enthusiastic supporters and a smaller group of protesters had earlier gathered in front of the gates of the town's migrant centre, where Salvini would give his speech, trading insults and almost coming to blows.

French far-right leader Marine Le Pen tweeted: "It's a victory of democracy over intimidation and threats from the European Union". Nigel Farage, a British force behind the successful Brexit movement, advised Italy's populists to "stay strong or the bully boys will be after you".

After he left the palace, Mr. Salvini said, "Savona is in the right place to renegotiate the European Union rules, and we have a finance minister in ideal synchrony with Savona, thus there is no step back, but he's been doubled".

She pointed out that European Commission chief Jean-Claude Juncker recently called for the EU to find avenues where it can work with Russian Federation, saying "this Russia-bashing has to be brought to an end".

His first attempt to assemble an M5S-League coalition government collapsed on Sunday.

A senior League official said Savona will be likely picked for European Affairs minister.
