G7 leaders meet amid fear of a global trade war

WATCH Opposition Leader asks Prime Minister why there’s delay in Canadian tariffs taking effect

He is not exactly happy about it.

US President Donald Trump is not really fan of British Prime Minister Theresa May. He has mused about finding new ways to punish the northern neighbour in recent days, frustrated with the country's retaliatory trade moves.

"There will be no world hegemony if we know how to organise ourselves".

Europe and hosts Canada warned US President Donald Trump on Thursday that they will not be intimidated at the G7 summit, despite fears that a trade war will weaken the Western alliance. French President Emmanuel Macron, who has tried to be friendly with Trump in the past, has recently shifted to a tougher line against the White House. Trump was also enraged for several days before the cancelled trip to South America about the Federal Bureau of Investigation raids on Michael Cohen, his personal lawyer.

Trudeau is scheduled to meet with Trump at 5 p.m. on Friday, the official said at a press briefing in Quebec. Canada is waiting until the end of the month to apply them with the hope the Trump administration will reconsider.

But her decision to offer Mr Trump a state visit soon backfired when opposition supporters threatened a mass mobilisation.

Appealing to Mr Trump, who has justified slapping tariffs on U.S. allies by saying he wants to protect United States jobs and boost the country's economy, Mr Macron insisted: "A trade war is not good for anyone, starting with the American workers!"

Furthermore, he prefers visiting places where he is feted - such as on his trips previous year to Riyadh, Beijing and Paris - over attending summits where the attending leaders are treated as equals.

Trump raised the issue of United States vehicle imports with Abe at their meeting in Washington and said he wanted more investment in plants in the American industrial heartland of Michigan, Pennsylvania and Ohio.

Trump will leave the gathering at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday and put Everett Eissenstat, his deputy assistant for worldwide economic affairs, in charge for the remaining sessions, White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said in a statement on Thursday.

"President Trump will depart the G7 Summit at Charlevoix at 10:30 a.m. Saturday (10.30pm Saturday Singapore time), following the session on Women's Empowerment", she said.

'It's saddening': Massive river of lava wipes out hundreds of homes
Residents in the nearby areas should also be prepared to evacuate with little notice, officials said. Snyder said from now on, the county will provide counts of homes destroyed.

Trump may well be distracted by preparations for his June 12 summit with North Korea's Kim Jong Un, which will be in Singapore immediately after the rich-world talking shop in Canada.

"I'll be very happy to be - in the name of all Quebecers - in Montreal today to greet [Macron] and also have a very important conversation with him on many, many accounts: mainly worldwide trade, metal taridds that were introduced wrongly", Couillard said.

Macron made initial headway in forming a public friendship with Trump, but has failed to sway the U.S. leader on any issue, while Merkel has been distracted by coalition negotiations.

Later Thursday, Trump tweeted: "Prime Minister Trudeau is being so indignant, bringing up the relationship that the USA and Canada had over the many years and all sorts of other things.but he doesn't bring up the fact that they charge us up to 300% on dairy - hurting our Farmers, killing our Agriculture!"

Macron made clear Thursday that the other six countries wouldn't hesitate to go it alone.

Standing next to each other on Parliament Hill, Macron and Trudeau say they will still push Trump to reverse his controversial imposition of steel and aluminum tariffs on his G7 partners, which they brand as illegal and bad for everyone's economy.

"There are disagreements", top White House economics advisor Larry Kudlow acknowledged.

"There's never really been a fundamental question about commitment to the postwar global economic order", Thomas Wright, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution, told reporters on a call about the summit.

Financial markets around the world were battered by Trump's trade threats. "So I don't think there's any issue there at all".

He described the disputes as a "family quarrel".
