Donald Trump asks U.S. representatives not to endorse G7 Summit communique

Trump, who is on his way to Singapore for a summit with North Korea's leader, also reiterated warnings that his administration was mulling tariffs "on automobiles flooding the USA market" in a move that would be primarily aimed at another G7 member, Germany. Mr. Trump also warned that retaliating against the US tariffs would be a "mistake", suggesting that the USA might just not deal with countries who fail to treat the U.S.at his standards.

European officials at the summit were shocked by the idea, or dismissive, and Tusk, while admitting that it was hard to be surprised by Trump's pronouncements any more, said: "Let's leave the G7 as it is".

"We're like the piggy bank that everybody's robbing, and that ends", Trump said in a press conference Saturday.

President Trump recaps his participation at a "tremendously successful" G7 summit, says trade, tariffs and immigration topped the agenda. That's the way it should be.

Trump's counterparts in the G7 had sought this week to try to find some semblance of consensus with Washington on trade and the other key issues that have formed the basis of the 42-year-old grouping of industrialized nations.

"The United States has been taken advantage of for decades and decades and we can't do that anymore". He has long argued for reciprocal trade, meaning that U.S. tariff rates should be equal to other major trading partners' duties. "We have a tremendous trade imbalance".

European officials suggested that the upbeat, punchy news conference that Trump delivered before skipping out on the summit was aimed at his trade-skeptic supporters back home, and did not reflect the results of the summit.

'I think there are various discussions about alternatives that would not be that, and that would not be entirely destabilizing for a trade deal, and I think we are open to creativity, ' he said. "And it's going to stop". Or we'll stop trading with them. And that's a very profitable answer, if we have to do it.

Trump says they will either have a better agreement on NAFTA or two deals involving separate trade deals with both Canada and Mexico. "The numbers are so much against them, we win that war 1000 times out of a 1000".

Trump gave "a long, frank rant", the official said, repeating a position he carried through the 2016 US election campaign into the White House that the United States had suffered at the hands of its trading partners, with French President Emmanuel Macron pushing back on the assertion and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe chiming in.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau addresses a press conference at the conclusion of the G7 summit in La Malbaie, Quebec, June 9, 2018. Mr Trump said the move would protect domestic producers that were vital to USA security.

Ahead of the G7 summit, which began on Thursday, Donald Trump also caused fresh controversy by suggesting Russian Federation be re-admitted to the G7.

Trump's abbreviated stay at this Quebec resort saw him continuing the same type of tough talk on trade as when he departed the White House, when he accused Trudeau of being "indignant".
