Soldier killed in Somalia attack identified

US military service member killed in Somalia attack

'We attacked a military base ... killed one USA soldier, two Kenyan soldiers and nine Somali soldiers from Jubbaland state.

A US Africa Commander said US troops with Somalian and Kenyan forces came under mortar and small-arms fire in Jubaland, Somalia on Friday.

Somali officials have said civilians have been killed in more than one joint us military operation with Somali forces.

We also injured four USA soldiers, ' Abdiasis Abu Musab, al Shabaab's military operations spokesman said.

According to the U.S. Africa Command, U.S. service members were with Somali forces in an operation aimed at clearing al-Shabab, a terrorist organization, from villages and establishing a permanent combat outpost. There are now 500 troops stationed in Somalia fighting Islamic terrorism, but there could be more due to shadow wars.

Earlier this month, al-Shabab claimed a series of attacks across the country, according to the SITE Intelligence group.

Another U.S. service member in Somalia was killed in May 2017 during an operation about 40 miles (64 kilometers) west of Mogadishu.

Associated Press video on Friday showed Somali forces firing weapons from atop pickup trucks in a muddy rural area, and an unidentified USA soldier speaking with local residents.

Jutanugarn earns four-stroke lead at U.S. Women's Open
But Kim made bogey - her first of the day - on 18 while Jutanugarn made par again to send the format to sudden death. Her confidence shaken, she had another bogey on 12 and the tournament was suddenly much closer than anyone expected.

Three of the four US service members were transferred for medical treatment while the fourth received medical care on the spot, the Washington Post reported.

Since being pushed out of Mogadishu in 2011, the group has lost control of most of Somalia's cities and towns.

Miliken's was the first US combat death in Somalia since 1993, when 18 USA service members died battling Somali militiamen in an episode that became known as "Black Hawk Down".

The U.S. team was backed up by armed surveillance aircraft, the officials said.

The US had pulled out of the Horn of Africa nation after 1993, when two helicopters were shot down in Mogadishu and bodies of Americans were dragged through the streets.

The role of U.S. troops during the operation was to provide aerial surveillance and to provide other assistance to the coalition group.

The casualty, coming less than a year after the death in Niger of four Army special operations soldiers, could raise further questions about the presence of United States troops on remote missions in Africa.
