Trump trade fury plunges G7 summit into failure

Trump falsely accuses Canada of burning down White House in War of 1812 (report)

White House chief economic adviser Larry Kudlow, left, and National Security Adviser John Bolton look on as President Donald Trump speaks during a news conference at the G-7 summit, Saturday, June 9, 2018, in Charlevoix, Canada.

The other leaders of G7 nations must not be afraid to reach agreements without US President Donald Trump at their upcoming summit, French President Emmanuel Macron said on Thursday, as a trade war between Washington and its allies looms.

While the Trump administration has characterized their rift as a family quarrel, his fellow leaders appear to be itching for a fight with a United States president - the G7's traditional patriarch - during the two-day summit in the Canadian countryside.

"Canadians are polite, we're reasonable, but we also will not be pushed around", Trudeau said.

Trump has also caused concern among his party and even within his administration in seeking to fix USA relations with the Kremlin.

Trudeau's office responded to Trump's tweets in a statement Saturday evening, saying Trudeau had been upfront with the president about his criticisms.

Trump will then head to Singapore ahead of his highly-anticipated meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on Tuesday.

"Very dishonest and weak" he claimed, adding in a separate tweet: "I have instructed our U.S. reps not to endorse the communique". Trump will likely have to meet all of them again, with the exception of Paolo Gentiloni, who is no longer Italian Prime Minister.

G7 leaders meet amid fear of a global trade war
Financial markets around the world were battered by Trump's trade threats. "So I don't think there's any issue there at all". But her decision to offer Mr Trump a state visit soon backfired when opposition supporters threatened a mass mobilisation.

The Canadian leader is also embroiled in a row with Washington over negotiations to revamp the nearly 25-year-old the North American Free Trade Agreement.

While the two men have had several seemingly congenial meetings and phone calls since Trump took office, they could not be more different in terms of policy, with Trudeau a progressive liberal, outspoken on feminism and the merits of diversity and who was close to former president Barack Obama.

In a statement issued following Mr Trump's tweets, Mr Trudeau said he remained focus on what was accomplished at the G7 summit. The president had described the G7 meeting as cordial, even though he accused the US allies of treating America "like a piggy bank".

President Trump leaves the G-7 summit after holding a press conference in the Canadian resort town of La Malbaie. Pleas by the other member countries for exemptions from the United States steel and aluminum tariffs, which went into effect on 1 June, have fallen on deaf ears.

Following Trudeau's comments regarding the communique, the Canadian leader said "strong, firm conversations on trade and specifically American tariffs" took placed at the G-7 meeting. "And I think on trade, there is a critical path, there is a way to progress altogether", he said, speaking in English.

Fears of a looming trade war were heightened last week after all the G7 nations announced plans to retaliate against Trump's tariffs with tariffs of their own. He added that he did not blame G7 leaders for the "unfair" trade deals. Trump said Friday he thinks the group will produce a joint statement.

Economically, Europe may have more to fear if Trump does go for auto tariffs. They have recovered somewhat, but are still vulnerable and Italy's new government is also a risk. The United States and Japan, however, did not sign the charter.

Trump repeated his call for Russian Federation to be allowed back into the alliance of world powers.
