Kwesi Nyantakyi resigns as Ghana FA President after bribery exposé

Martin Amidu with President Akufo-Addo

He is considered the second most powerful person in Ghanaian football.

According to Kwesi Nyantakyi, who resigned as FA Boss on Friday, he was deceived by people who he thought were genuine and could actually invest in the country.

Ghana's Sports Minister Isaac Asiama has stated that the association will be "dissolved with immediate effect", Ghana Web reports.

Below is the full statement from the President of Ghana.

Asiamah said the decision had been a hard one to take, and is aware that it is likely to trigger some sort of action from world football's governing body FIFA, who strictly forbid the interference of government in the national federations.

A statement, signed by Information Minister, Dr Mustapha Hamid, said "Government is shocked and outraged at the contents of the recently-aired video documentary, which captures the investigation conducted into football administration by the journalist, Anas Aremeyaw Anas, titled "Number 12: When Misconduct and Greed become the Norm".

Mr Nyantakyi has not replied to multiple requests for comment while the GFA has said it would cooperate with any investigation.

Ghana's U-20 team also won a historic World Cup under his reign.

He also boasted of his relationship with President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, suggesting the president and his vice, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, were susceptible to bribery, and that the two could be influenced with $5 million and $3 million respectively.

Nyantakyi was caught on tape accepting $65,000 from undercover reporters from Tiger Eye PI, who posed as investors interested in sponsoring the Ghana Premier League in clear violation of FIFA's code of ethics which bar members from accepting cash gifts.

One of the harshest offenses shown was carried out by Kwesi Nyantakyi, the president of GFA and a Federation Internationale de Football Association council member, who is seen taking $65,000 from Anas' men.
