Apple bans cryptocurrency mining on iPhones

Design your app to use power efficiently.

Cupertino's new dev rules restrict apps that drain the battery, put unnecessary strain on an iPhone's or iPad's resources, and cause the fancy gadgets to generate excessive heat.

In an update to Apple's developer policies, the tech giant has now stipulated that any app containing "background processes" which are unrelated to the app - such as cryptocurrency mining - are now specifically banned.

Apple updated its App Store review guidelines last week, during the WWDC 2018 conference. These conditions extend to apps providing cryptocurrency futures trading, and other crypto-securities or quasi-securities trading. The move comes at a time when 'cryptojacking', a malware attack wherein malicious attackers scrumptiously hijack a computer or a phone's computing power to mine cryptocurrencies, is a growing menace. It also insisted that apps involved in Initial Coin Offerings, cryptocurrency futures trading and the like had to come from established banks, securities firms, futures commissions merchants or other approved financial institutions.

Notably, Apple said that it will not block the mining apps that mine outside of the device, like cloud-based mining.

The record seven-time African champions have qualified for the World Cup for only the third time and first since 1990. So if we want to do something great, it is now.

The only limitation that Apple are putting down is that no apps will be allowed that encourage payments of cryptocurrencies or the incentivisation of cryptocurrencies to people who download certain apps or advertise certain cryptocurrency-based apps.

Apple has banned developers from submitting cryptocurrency mining apps designed for the iPhone or iPad. The app even made it to number 3 in the finance category of the App Store before Apple pulled it down.

The company has listed the complete guidelines on the section of cryptocurrency.

Apple is also cutting down on third-party apps providing crypto transactions on approved exchanges.

And apps may not offer cryptocurrency as an incentive for taking specific actions, such as downloading other apps, posting to social media or urging others to download apps.
