Trump Kim summit: North Korea sets out its Singapore agenda

Trump and Kin

Pompeo dismissed a report from North Korea's official KCNA about this week's meeting between Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

At the briefing, Pompeo reiterated that the shared goal of the US, South Korea and Japan is to get North Korea to denuclearize not only completely, but also irreversibly and verifiably.

Despite the uncertainties, Mr Trump talked up the outcome of what was the first meeting between a U.S. and North Korean leader in six decades of hostility.

But others have criticized him for making excuses for Kim's human rights abuses and considering America's media organizations a greater threat than the nuclear weapon-armed country.

This did not stop the U.S. president from talking up the outcome of what was the first meeting between a United States and North Korean leader in six decades of hostility.

"Each of those three countries has also acknowledged that it's important that the sanctions regime that is in place today remain in place until such time as that denuclearization is, in fact, complete", Pompeo told reporters in Beijing following talks with Chinese Minister of Foreign Affairs Wang Yi (王毅).

North Korea has been isolated on the global stage for decades - with brief bursts of diplomacy - for its appalling human rights record and its relentless pursuit of nuclear weapons.

North Korea still has nuclear weapons.

Regarding the joint exercises, Kang only said at the press conference, "This is an issue that involves the [South] Korea-U.S. alliance".

At the Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing, US senators questioned Harris about his position on the president's unilateral concession that could weaken the US-South Korea alliance.

In the military, returning a salute from a military officer of a friendly foreign nation is common practice for USA military officers and considered a display of military professionalism.

After meeting with Kim, many were surprised when Trump spoke about joint military exercises, what he called "war games", with South Korea.

Trump has been under fire for his friendliness towards North Korea.

.

Tokyo is working on arranging a meeting between the prime minister, Shinzo Abe, and Kim, with one possibility being an Abe visit to Pyongyang around August, the Yomiuri newspaper reported. It is possible North Korean officials will seek a firm commitment from the South on stopping its military drills with the United States.
