Haley says USA will leave United Nations human rights council

U.S. will leave UN Human Rights Council, ambassador Haley says

The move was immediately condemned by a dozen charitable groups, who wrote to Pompeo to say they were "deeply disappointed with the Administration's decision to withdraw the United States from the United Nations Human Rights Council, the premier intergovernmental human rights body at the global level".

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and U.S. Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley are scheduled to announce the withdrawal at 5 p.m EST, reported The Hill. "The UN Human Rights Council is undermined by politicisation and the singling out of Israel in its standing agenda and the United Kingdom has shown the way to giving this potentially crucial body much greater weight and standing". "If it fails to change, then we must pursue the advancement of human rights outside of the Council", Haley said at a speech in Geneva previous year.

Haley had threatened to withdraw from the council in June 2017 unless it reformed, including by removing its built-in procedural mechanism to bash Israel. Libya was kicked out seven years ago.

Although numerous officials have said repeatedly that "America First does not mean America Alone", the administration has retreated from multiple multilateral accords and consensuses since it took office. The United States and Australia cast the only "no" votes. The commission had faced severe criticism because its members included countries with poor rights records that undercut its mission.

The US joined the council in 2009 under President Obama.

Premier League fixtures deal Arsenal boss Unai Emery a nightmare start
Four rounds of Premier League fixtures are scheduled before the first global break, which is on the weekend of 8-9 September. Liverpool will also host Southampton , Cardiff, Fulham and Everton on weekend following Champions League matches.

Last month, Haley walked out of the chamber as Permanent Observer of Palestine to the UN Riyad Mansour began speaking at a UN Security Council meeting on the continued violence at the border of Israel and the Gaza Strip, after Israeli forces opened fire on Palestinian protesters there, killing dozens.

All concerns regarding human rights abuses in all the other countries around the world are debated under Agenda Item 4.

The officials said the administration had concluded that its efforts to promote reform on the council had failed and that withdrawal was the only step it could take to demonstrate its seriousness.

The Human Rights Council opened its latest three-week session Monday, and the High Commissioner Zeid Ra'ad Al Hussein blasted the U.S.in his opening remarks for its "unconscionable" immigration policy of separating migrant parents from their children at the border, calling it "government-sanctioned child abuse".

Jewish rights group the Simon Wiesenthal Center applauded the USA withdrawal and urged other countries to do the same. "The HRC [Human Rights Council] consistently ignores the worst human rights abuses in the world proving it is not an honest broker".

She said the withdrawal notwithstanding, the USA would continue to defend human rights at the United Nations. In that situation, the US would be able to speak out on rights abuses, but not to vote. No other country has such a mandate leveled against it. The U.S., as at other United Nations organizations, is Israel's biggest defender.
