Catholic priest slaps baby then grabs its face during Christening

A French Catholic priest was suspended Friday after a video of him smacking a crying baby during a baptism ceremony went viral, drawing widespread condemnation on social media. The clergyman then tells the child to: "calm down, calm down, you must calm down".

This is the shocking moment a priest slaps a hysterical baby hard across the cheek during a baptism. He then attempts to console the child by grabbing the boy's face and urging him to "calm down, calm down".

Eventually, the man standing behind her snatches the baby away from the priest.

According to People, a Reddit user who originally uploaded the footage said the priest was French.

It's not yet clear exactly where and when the incident captured in the video took place. "Here. And then, we are going to embrace the little guy, because he will have become a little more Christian".

The parents or god-parents of the child look to be in disbelief as the priest begins to pull the child close to him once again. I'll scream louder than you, OK?

Melania Trump sends a questionable message en route to the border
Shocking images and audio of children being detained at Customs and Border Protection facilities provoked outrage online. She changed into sneakers before landing, but the heels captured a disproportionate amount of media attention.

"I'm trying to figure out why no one slapped the old man back", one viewer posted. Seems like he was getting frustrated.

One added: "This is disturbing and has really upset me".

"And yet another reason why I'm not bringing up my kids as Catholics", wrote a Reddit user.

Unbelievably, there were some commenters who defended the priest's actions.

It's unclear when and where the video was taken.
