In Trump’s efficient U.S. family separation system, reunions take far longer

Trump alone to blame for family separations but entire GOP will pay

Elon Musk has waded into the ongoing political controversy about family separations, offering to help children stranded at the US-Mexico border.

Former president Barack Obama broke his silence on Wednesday - World Refugee Day - on immigrant families who have forced to be separated when entering the country at the southern border. In recent weeks, more than 2,500 such children were separated from their parents.

For days, Trump and his top administration officials were unwilling to unilaterally reverse the separation policy, insisting that congressional action was required.

Particularly worrisome, Republican operatives say, is that the images and sound of children in detention facilities could have a lasting impact with suburban women and drown out the economic-success message the party has been pushing.

Family separation is now a huge issue in the United States, where children have been taken away from their parents as a effect of the Trump government's "zero tolerance" policy on illegal immigration.

As Mr Trump walked out of the closed-door meeting in the Capitol basement, he was confronted by about a half-dozen House Democrats, who yelled, "Stop separating our families!" We're talking about trade. The Alabama-based Southern Poverty Law Center said the order didn't go almost far enough. And officials said the cases of the children already separated and turned over to their custody would proceed as usual.

President Donald Trump on Wednesday signed an executive order ending his administration's practice of separating migrant families, but maintaining the "zero-tolerance" policy that criminally prosecutes migrants who cross the border illegally.

"We will keep families together, but the border is going to be just as tough", he said.

The Trump administration has defended the separations in several ways, claiming that it's necessary for national security.

GOP leaders have struggled to rally support from Republicans.

But multiple House Republicans say they don't believe that either bill can pass, even after Trump told GOP members he would support them on immigration.

Spain prepares to welcome hundreds of migrants on Aquarius rescue ship
Each were assigned to a translator and authorities worked to determine their identities before they were sent to welcome centers. It was carrying 106 of the 629 migrants it rescued from the Mediterranean, according to the Italian news agency Ansa.

A new CNN poll out Monday found that 67% of Americans oppose the separation of children from their parents, with 68% of independent voters disapproving of Trump's position.

President Trump met with House Republicans and essentially told them he would back the GOP compromise bill crafted by leadership and moderates, clearing up a lot of confusion that he caused from last Friday when he said he wouldn't sign it.

Protesters walk though the streets as they protest against the Trump administration's immigration policies on June 21, 2018 in El Paso, Texas.

British Prime Minister Theresa May, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, the Council of Europe and Pope Francis all took issue with the "zero tolerance" policy. "Do we look away, or do we choose to see something of ourselves and our children?"

"The administration still plans to criminalize families - including children - by holding them in prison-like detention facilities".

The Flores settlement, named for a teenage girl who brought the case in the 1980s, requires the government to release children from custody and to their parents, adult relatives or other caretakers, in order of preference.

The order aims to end the separation of most migrant families by detaining them together while they await their court dates in criminal and immigration court. In the order, the president also directs Attorney General Jeff Sessions to file a request in U.S. District Court in California to modify the Flores settlement so that the families could be detained together until their court dates.

Maryland Rep. Elijah Cummings, the top Democrat on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, pleaded with Republicans on the panel to end what he called "internment camps". Instead, the children could be detained with their parents for extended periods.

Parents who are found to have crossed the border illegally with their children are arrested, but because the children themselves have not committed a crime, they are not allowed to stay with the parents.

House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., said Wednesday morning that the House will vote on immigration legislation, despite signs that the bills up for consideration can not pass.
