Luis Suarez seeks World Cup redemption as he reaches 100 caps

Uruguay defeated Saudi Arabia in Rostov, courtesy of a Luis Suarez goal, who was making his 100th appearance for the La Celeste, to secure their place in the knockout phase of the tournament.

The Saudis gave Carlos Alberto Parreira the chop after a 4-0 loss to hosts France in the group stages in 1998 - even though four years earlier he had won the World Cup with his native Brazil.

This also means that hosts Russian Federation, who have won their opening two Group A matches, are through to the next phase with one fixture to spare, while Egypt and Saudi Arabia are both out of the tournament.

Russian Federation and Uruguay can now look forward to a likely second-round meeting against either Portugal or Spain, depending on the outcome of Group B's remaining contests.

Mexico stun champions Germany 1-0 in World Cup opener
And if they finish runners-up in Group F , Germany could be on course to face Brazil in a daunting second-round match-up. One desperate last attack then had Neuer come up for a corner before Mexico closed out an unforgettable triumph.

Luis Suarez got lucky with an easy chance just three yards away from the goal, goalkeeper Al Owais made a terrible mistake of coming out and a Suarez easy tap remained unmarked in a gifted corner. "It's a lovely moment and we want to enjoy it", Suarez said.

Saudi Arabia have conceded 14 headed goals since their debut in 1994 in World Cups, more than any other team over that period. "We still haven't hit our stride so we need to tweak some things."Uruguay and Russian Federation both have six points from their opening two matches, putting them into the round of 16 with a match to go". You don't see 10-0 games at the World Cup anymore. While Saudi Arabia goalkeeper Mohammed Al Owais miss-timed the ball, Suarez was on hand to knock it inside the nets and become the first Uruguay player to score at three World Cups. All the teams out there are good we respect all of them.

The victory ensured the continuation of a proud record that started with Uruguay advancing all the way to the semi-finals of the 2010 World Cup.

JOB SECURITYSaudi Arabia coach Juan Antonio Pizzi said he was not ready to quit despite the early exit and 5-0 opening loss to Russian Federation.
