The Families Belong Together event is billed by organizers as a nationwide day of action to protest the Trump administration's strict immigration policies and call for the reunification of families separated and detained as a result of those policies' implementation.

Ms Jayapal, 52, was arrested along with over 500 other women at Capitol Hill on Thursday.

Women's March officials, including board member and anti-Semitic Palestinian activist Linda Sarsour and co-president Bob Bland, called for abolishing the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the firing of Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Trump's policy adviser Stephen Miller.

About 100 people were arrested at the protest in the Senate building, but CNN reported that Capitol Police are expecting to arrest "a couple of hundred".

Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA) was arrested at a rally to protest the conditions migrant families and children are being kept in under President Donald Trump's immigration policy.

"Their parents shouldn't even be locked up", Fudoli said.

Organizers say they are receiving strong support from mothers who were opposed to the Trump administration's previous policy of separating children from their parents at the U.S. -Mexico border. "This is not a bad enough crime to lock them up and take their children away".

The Women's March announced its plans for the last week and held training meetings in the days leading up to it.

Most of the children who had been separated from their families before the order was signed have not yet been reunited with them. "Camps for children is just as wrong as camps for children and adults".

For Ingrid Zelaya, who works in communications at the immigrant advocacy group CASA, this was not her first protest, but it was her first act of civil disobedience.
