Party in OKC: George stays put

Paul George Edit

The NBA free agency season is off to a fiery start with Paul George silencing rumours of a move to Los Angeles by confirming he's committed to signing a new deal with the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Paul George was considered one of the most talented and unpredictable free agents of 2018.

The all-star swingman announced his attention on Saturday night on stage at party hosted by teammate Russell Westbrook.

After the 2016-17 season, George grew frustrated with the Pacers' lack of roster improvements and requested a trade out of IN, with the Los Angeles Lakers his preferred destination.

It was reported just before midnight on the East coast that George has agreed to re-sign with the Thunder. Oklahoma City fell to the Jazz in six games in the first round.

The Thunder's current salary for next season stands at $156 million, which is $32 million over the tax line. The deal is reportedly for 4 years, $137 million. Oklahoma City could face the largest tax bill in National Basketball Association history, according to ESPN.

He arrived via trade with the Philadelphia 76ers in November 2016 in exchange for Ersan Ilyasova and a 2020 top-20 protected first-round pick.

While the reason for the party wasn't clear, ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski pointed to something else going on in Oklahoma City on Friday. In a league based on efficiency, George simply is not worth the money Oklahoma City is paying him. Oklahoma City outscored opponents by 14.2 points per 100 possessions last season with its starters on the court, the second-best net rating among the 10 lineups that logged at least 500 minutes in 2017-18 according to NBA Advanced Stats.

The success of the Thunder's starting five last season has been a point in favor of Anthony's value to the team.
