Molinari in a record runaway at final Quicken Loans National

Francesco Molinari became the first Italian to win a US PGA event since the late Toney Penna took the 1947 Atlanta OpenMore

POTOMAC, Md. - You cannot play defense in golf, so in the end, there is nothing Tiger Woods could do about Francesco Molinari on Sunday at the Quicken Loans National. He moved to 42nd in the FedEx Cup standings with his win.

Call it mixed results.

Molinari never buckled on the front nine despite hearing the Tiger roars and then took a stranglehold on the tournament with an eagle from 48 feet on the 10th, a birdie from 2 feet on the 11th, a birdie from 7 feet on the 12th, a birdie from 12 feet on the 13th and another birdie from 2 feet on the 14th.

Woods tallied six birdies and two bogeys during his round on Sunday.

He sank an eight-foot birdie at 15 and a 14-footer at the 16th, but it was too little too late.

"I m seeing the lines again, I m rolling the ball on my line, I ve got the speed and I really like the swing of this putter", Woods said.

The pair lie two shots ahead of Zac Blair and Ryan Armour, while Andrew Landry is at 10 under. The 13th was a 370-yard par-4. For the third straight day, he hit 13 of 18 greens.

"Basically, just trying to get efficient hitting the golf ball and then getting comfortable hitting the ball down", Woods said.

It will take a lot for Woods to catch that elusive win that he's been chasing since his return, but the fact that he's remotely in the mix will have everyone paying very close attention to the action all day. Evidently I'd have had to shoot 24 on the back nine.

Uruguay 1-0 Portugal live updates
Ronaldo had company everywhere he went on the field and Portugal's supporting cast was unable to provide enough help. Cavani received the ball from Rodrigo Betancur and sprayed a wonderful 40-yard diagonal pass to Luis Suarez .

"What's Francesco's doing in phenomenal".

The good news: Woods tied Molinari for the most birdies during the tournament with 21. "Hit a attractive putt at 12, left it about an inch short of the hole".

That is somewhat misleading, as fewer than half of the 74 players who made the cut had more opportunities at that range than he did.

His victory vaulted him to 42nd on the season-long points race and puts him on pace for his ultimate goal to qualify for the Tour Championship, which he narrowly missed past year. "I felt good all week with my putter". He made three more birdies and ended his round by missing a birdie putt from 8 feet. But that is the only event in which he has finished closer than five strokes to the eventual victor. I m starting to see it, starting to feel it and I had the pace pretty much good all week. "It was a lot easier than I thought (it would be)". "And I could have easily lost it, but I made two nice saves".

Henderson, the 2016 victor, was second.

In 11 tournaments, he has three top-5s and five top-12 finishes.

Ancer, a 27-year-old Mexican, had never been among the top 10 going into the final round in his previous two starts.

Woods meanwhile remained confident about winning his first title since 2013. The tournament is leaving the venue after this year.
