Third-parties may read your Google Mail emails if you allow it

Amid the controversy over the tech giants spying on their customers, censoring social-media postings and discriminating against conservatives, Google promised to stop culling marketing information from emails. Its employees examined hundreds of user emails in order to build a new feature for the app. Google stopped that practice a year ago, but a Wall Street Journal investigation shows there are plenty of apps that have access to your email, and some of them feed some of your emails to real humans.

As per a report by Business Insider, software developed by third parties are able to scan and read your Gmail, apparently without much restriction from Google.

Google's system allows or disallows access to the email data only; the company makes no distinction between algorithms that read emails, for instance to provide functionality, and humans who read it.

Google, however, has denied privacy violations, stating data is provided to vetted third-party developers only and with the users' explicit consent. We suggested the very same thing previous year after a big Google Docs phishing scam hit Google users. An executive at another company said that the reading of emails by employees has become "common practice".

You can remove access for any service or application listed on the page and should do so for any that you don't use. Google does little to police those developers, who train their computers-and, in some cases, employees-to read their users' emails, a Wall Street Journal examination has found.

Uruguay 1-0 Portugal live updates
Ronaldo had company everywhere he went on the field and Portugal's supporting cast was unable to provide enough help. Cavani received the ball from Rodrigo Betancur and sprayed a wonderful 40-yard diagonal pass to Luis Suarez .

Google is allowing app developers to sift through your Gmail account.

"As anyone who knows anything about software knows, humans program software - artificial intelligence comes directly from human intelligence", Return Path founder Matt Blumberg wrote, adding that the company takes "great care to limit who has access to the data, supervise all access to the data, deploying a Virtual Safety Room, where data can not leave this VSR and all data is destroyed after the work is completed".

One of those companies is Return Path Inc., which collects data for marketers by scanning the inboxes of more than two million people who have signed up for one of the free apps in Return Path's partner network using a Gmail, Microsoft Corp. or Yahoo email address.

One security expert said it was "surprising" that Google allowed it.

Google didn't respond to a request for comment.
