SUPREME SHOWDOWN: Trump Creates CONFIRMATION Team as the Left Vows to Fight

Justin Clark, director of the Office of Public Liaison, will oversee White House coordination with outside groups.

To facilitate logistics of the power change, President Trump's assistant Don McGahn will oversee the selection and confirmation, while White House aide Raj Shah will head the comms operation.

President Trump himself told reporters he had interviewed four candidates. Chieffo took her previous year to oppose President Trump's first Supreme Court pick, Neil Gorsuch, but Gorsuch was confirmed without much trouble in 2017 after the Senate voted to change its rules and clear the way for Supreme Court justices to win approval based on a simple 51-vote majority.

Trump said he expects to meet with two or three additional candidates, and that an announcement is planned for next Monday.

"I don't think I'm going to be so specific in the questions.and I'm actually told that I shouldn't be", Trump said in an interview with Fox News' Maria Bartiromo that aired Sunday.

Abortion Rights Group Targets Sen. Susan Collins in SCOTUS Fight
Republicans hold a narrow 51-49 majority in the Senate, and it's even closer because of the absence of ailing Sen. Also on that list was Bob Young, a retired Michigan Supreme Court justice who briefly ran for U.S.

The future orientation of the Supreme Court depends on who will succeed Kennedy, a conservative. He played the same role in the successful confirmation of Justice Neil Gorsuch a year ago.

JOHNSON: Brian Fallon, who runs Demand Justice, says women in that focus group got more involved after they understood Justice Kennedy was the swing vote on abortion rights.

Already one top Democrat is focusing his rhetorical fire on Ms Barrett by name - something party leaders have yet to do for any of the other candidates on Mr Trump's short list. In June 2017, the Supreme Court struck down the Texas law in a 5-3 vote, saying it "provides few, if any, health benefits for women, poses a substantial obstacle to women seeking abortions, and constitutes an "undue burden" on their constitutional right to do so". The Senate confirmed Gorsuch after a fierce battle. Harry Reid. The Reid rule requires only a simple majority to confirm a judicial nominee without the threat of indefinite delay through a filibuster. Collins voted in favor of Gorsuch, a conservative, because he is a believer in relying on precedent and authored a book on the subject. Vice President Mike Pence can be called on to break a tie.

Before joining the Supreme Court, Souter had been a judge on the federal appeals court based in Boston, and he's served on the court regularly in retirement, hearing more than 400 cases.

A controversial issue overwhelming the debate on the appointment of Kennedy's successor is abortion, which was legalised by a Supreme Court decision in 1973 and may come up again before the court. Lee has been floated as a potential justice as well in the conservative press. She is not merely the nominee to whom Senator Feinstein, Yoda-like, said, "The dogma lives loudly within you, and that's a concern". "It's about having judges on the Court who are going to interpret the Constitution the way it's written, and part of interpreting the Constitution is taking into account major precedents". Despite the Supreme Court's prominence, thousands of consequential court decisions are made in the lower courts. Now Fallon runs Demand Justice, a 12-person start-up operation housed in a shared work space a block away from the White House. Mr. Trump might want to turn the tables on his liberal opponents who consider his policies not in the interest of women and minorities by nominating a woman or a member of a minority group.
