North Korea fails to attend talks on repatriation of USA war dead

U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday revealed a letter from North Korean leader Kim Jong-un that expressed hope for further progress in bilateral ties.

Mr Trump said the letter from Mr Kim (dated 6 July), was "a very nice note".

North Korea accused the United States on Saturday of making "gangster-like" demands in the talks in North Korea, contradicting Pompeo who said the old enemies had made progress.

North Korea has long trumpeted a denuclearisation goal, but one that it sees as a lengthy process of undefined multilateral disarmament on the entire Korean peninsula, rather than a unilateral dismantlement of its nuclear arsenal.

"I firmly believe that the strong will, honest efforts and unique approach of myself and Your Excellency Mr. President aimed at opening up a new future between the DPRK and the USA will surely come to fruition", Kim wrote, referring to North Korea by its acronym. Although Pompeo insisted progress continued to be made, North Korea accused the U.S. of making "gangster-like" demands. "We will be ready", she told reporters aboard Pompeo's plane, as the top USA diplomat flew home to Washington after attending a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit.

Trump met with Kim in Singapore on June 12-the first meeting between leaders of the two countries.

But North Korea's delegation failed show up.

Earlier Thursday the North Koreans postponed a meeting with US representatives at the inter-Korean border meant to discuss the repatriation of remains of American troops killed in the Korean War.

Trump suggests China might be interfering in U.S.-North Korea talks
Speaking in Tokyo , Pompeo said his efforts to push the North on disarmament had the backing of the entire worldwide community. Countries concerned, including South Korea and Japan, should realize the long and hard path to North Korea's denuclearization.

Last week, North Korea accused the U.S. of using a "gangster-like" tactics to push it towards nuclear disarmament after a fresh round of high-level talks.

The Americans called North Korean representatives and scheduled a generals' meeting between the two nations to take place Sunday. Add North Korea as an interest to stay up to date on the latest North Korea news, video, and analysis from ABC News.

North Korea has offered to rearrange the meeting over war remains for Sunday instead, US State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said.

There are about 7,700 United States soldiers classified as missing in action in the war.

CNN reported last month that the Trump administration is expecting North Korea to return up to 200 sets of remains and that planning for the exchange has been underway. North Korea had also released the three American prisoners the government had been holding ahead of the summit.

North Korea said Saturday it was seeking the "earliest start of the working-level talks" on the recovery of USA remains.

During an official visit to Britain, Trump posted images of the Korean-language letter from Kim and its English translation.
