Judge snags Manafort's perks with jail transfer

Northern Neck Regional Jail Superintendent Ted Hull denied that Manafort was treated differently than prior occupants of the private living unit, which is reserved for "management problematic" inmates. One trial is set for July 25 in Alexandria, Virginia, and the second case in Washington, D.C., has a September 17 trial date. During his time at Northern Neck jail, ABC News reported that Manafort stayed in a cell by himself in the facility's VIP section, surrounded by walls painted in two shades of brown: bagel and biscuit.

Prosecutors also said they were in touch with Manafort's lawyers as recently as last week to ask if he had any concerns about being incarcerated, and said he had not raised any issues until now.

The back-and-forth matters because Manafort has cited restrictive conditions of his pretrial detention as a reason to postpone his case on bank and tax fraud charges until at least the autumn.

Paul Manafort arrived at the jail in Alexandria, Virginia - the William G. Truesdale Adult Detention Center - Thursday morning, according to a spokesperson for the Alexandria Sheriff's Office. They say Manafort has not been required to wear a prison uniform, and has a private telephone, a separate workspace and access to two laptops. At that time the judge will also consider Manafort's bid to have the trial moved from Alexandria to Roanoke, 244 miles to the south, or the state capital of Richmond.

The occasion of the mugshot was that Manafort was moved to a jail in Alexandria, Virginia thanks to his attorneys in a move that can only be described as a "clusterfuck".

"We may not be as wrapped up in the case as people in Northern Virginia - where politics is the biggest local industry - but is there really a registered voter in Southwest Virginia who has not heard of Manafort's indictment and special counsel Robert Mueller's larger investigation?" the editors asked.

Though Manafort's lawyers have said he spends almost all of his days in solitary confinement, prosecutors described his living arrangements as a "private, self-contained living unit, which is larger than other inmates' units" with its own bathroom and shower.

First two of Thai soccer team rescued from cave
The most touching note came from one whose name was not clear: "I'm doing fine, but the air is a little cold, but don't worry". Elon Musk has continued working on alternative strategies to rescue the remaining Thai boys stranded in Northern Thailand .

But prosecutors wrote that in a taped phone call from prison, Manafort told the person on the other end, "I've gone through all the discovery now".

In a rebuttal, Manafort's lawyers said the effort put into monitoring their client's phone calls showed that Mueller had "unlimited resources" and accused his office of choosing conversations "to support its version of events". In the last three weeks, Manafort has had more than 100 phone calls with his attorneys, and another 200 calls with other individuals, according to Wednesday's filing. "When the team takes the laptop from the jail, it reconnects to the internet and Manafort's emails are transmitted".

"Manafort also possesses a personal laptop that he is permitted to use in his unit", prosecutors wrote. He has pleaded not guilty in both cases.

Separately, in Washington federal court, prosecutors building a second criminal case against Manafort disclosed their allegation that the longtime lobbyist's foreign lobbying violations date to the 1980s.

Manafort is scheduled to stand trial on financial crimes starting July 25.

Hull said that when jail officials learned Manafort was communicating by email, his attorneys were told to stop the practice.
