U.S. officer quits after harassment over Puerto Rico shirt

The flag of Puerto Rico flies outside the island's Capitol building in San Juan

In this time of widespread disagreement, I hope we can all agree that the actions of Timothy Trybus, the Chicago man seen worldwide in a viral video harassing and screaming at a woman wearing a Puerto Rican flag T-shirt, were hateful.

In a now viral-video shot on June 14, an irate approaches Mia Irizarry as she waited for her family at a picnic area in the Forest Preserves of Cook County to celebrate her 24th birthday.

Timothy Trybus, 62, of Des Plaines now is charged with two felony counts of committing a hate crime in addition to misdemeanor counts of assault and disorderly conduct he already faced.

Timothy G. Trybus, the man police said harassed Irizarry, was arrested on the day of the incident on charges of assault and disorderly conduct, according to a police report.

Trybus has a bail hearing scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Friday in Skokie.

On Wednesday, Patrick Connor, a Forest Preserves of Cook County police officer who was being investigated for allegedly failing to act during the harassment resigned on Wednesday, and the county board commissioner on Thursday apologized and called the incident "truly appalling, gut wrenching, and a real wake-up call to everyone".

"Are you a citizen?" he's also heard saying.

More officers arrived and arrested the man.

Here's where we might not all agree, but I beg those who don't want to see this lone Chicago incident connected to President Donald Trump to at least consider that Gutierrez might have a point.

Irizarry recorded the encounter on her phone, saying she felt threatened, and posted the video to Facebook.

One of the other responding officers tells Trybus that he can't be harassing people, adding that people have just as much right to be in the park as he does. "The world is not going to change the United States of America, period", he continued.

Both sides had differing quarter-final performances and are now just a game away from the biggest prize in World Football. England manager Gareth Southgate and Harry Kane celebrate their entry into FIFA World Cup 2018 semifinals.

The officer can then be seen talking to the man who gesticulates back and tells him to "shut the f*** up". The woman, Mia Irizarry, is heard appealing to the officer to help restrain the man, but the officer doesn't appear to engage until almost 10 minutes later, when other officers arrive.

When the video started gaining media attention earlier this week, politicians including Puerto Rico's governor and Cook County politicians weighed in.

Later, she says: "Officer, I feel entirely uncomfortable, can you remove... please, officer" as the officer is seen walking away from her.

In a statement Thursday, Forest Preserve Supt.

What does the video show?

Finally an uninvolved bystander, who had been watching the scene unfold, called for more police.

Meanwhile, the Forest Preserves issued its own apology for what happened.

'We can not allow those who do not understand America's greatness to terrorize people due to their background.

"The investigation is ongoing and the officer involved has been assigned to desk duty pending the outcome". This is not the America we all believe in'.

It's not clear when the investigation into the officer's response will be completed.
