Trump re-election flags may get burned by his tariffs

After a White House meeting on Wednesday, Trump and Juncker said they agreed to hold sweeping trade talks on reducing tariff, subsidy and non-tariff barrier reductions, with Trump appearing to give ground on his threat to impose a 25 percent tariff on imported cars and auto parts.

"This was a very big day for free and fair trade", Trump said during a hastily scheduled joint appearance in the White House Rose Garden with Juncker, hailing a "new phase" of trade relations with the EU. Mr. Trump imposed a 25-percent tariff on steel and a 10-percent tariff on aluminum imported from the European Union in June, and the EU retaliated with "rebalancing" tariffs on US steel, agriculture and other products soon after.

Trump and Juncker appeared after a White House meeting, with both sides saying progress was made toward resolving some of the trade issues that have soured the relationship between the USA and the European Union since Trump imposed tariffs on European Union exports of steel and aluminum.

"We're starting the negotiation right now, but we know very much where it's going", Trump said after talks with European counterparts.

Juncker, who had been somewhat defiant ahead of the meeting, said afterwards: "I had the intention to make a deal today".

Kenny says the collateral damage of the Trump administration's trade war is real.

The Department of Agriculture will determine the payment to each farmer based on the size of a crop multiplied by a specific subsidy rate.

"We have to work together".

Brussels retaliated against the metal tariffs, imposing punitive duties on more than $3 billion of USA goods, including blue jeans, bourbon and motorcycles, as well as orange juice, rice and corn. With the announcement just occurring Tuesday it will be hard to predict what regions will receive aid but any kind of support can help offset what farmers in Minnesota and Northern Iowa have been facing.

Arab parliamentarians hail Saudi Arabia's role in supporting Palestinians
Saudi Arabia said the adoption of the law would also be a barrier to ending the decades-long Israeli-Palestinian conflict. A large influx of non-Jews could eventually make Jews a minority in their own country, government officials say.

Sen. Ben Sasse (R-NE) said Trump's trade war "is cutting the legs out from under farmers and White House's "plan" is to spend $12 billion on gold crutches".

But with Trump expecting Juncker to come to Washington with a "significant" offer - and Brussels saying that won't happen - the outcome of this meeting is too tricky to call.

Marta Bengoa, professor and head of the economics department at the Colin Powell School at the City College of NY, said the deal was encouraging, but she noted that an accord with Juncker is not the same as accord with the EU's 28 members.

"USDA will not stand by while our hard-working agricultural producers bear the brunt of unfriendly tariffs enacted by foreign nations".

The US also plans to buy crops such as fruits and nuts, distributing them to food banks and other government nutrition programmes.

"Our biggest exposure, our biggest unmitigated exposure, is really steel and aluminum when you look at all of the commodities", GM CEO Mary Barra said Wednesday.

"Well, I think that it's good anytime", Maupin said. His words suggested he was open to something resembling the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership, a proposed U.S. -Europe agreement on which negotiations have stopped.

Representative Terri Sewell says she is concerned about the impact of the trade war, saying "Farmers and ranchers are one of many constituencies who are facing direct losses from Trump's bad trade decisions".
