EU relaxes climate stance in trade sop to Trump

President Donald Trump proved himself once again as a "man of action" in a "town of talk" by gaining major trade concessions on Wednesday with European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, according to Kellyanne Conway.

Trump said he expected "something very positive to take place" during the White House talks - after sending a series of tweets blasting Europe for unfair treatment of U.S. exports. Meanwhile, on Tuesday, the White House said it is preparing a $12 billion aid package for USA farmers hit by trade tensions. But the European Union sees these tariffs as an economic threat and is preparing retaliatory measures.

President Donald Trump on Thursday trumpeted his trade deal with European allies, hailing it as a benefit to Iowa farmers who have been hurt by the fallout from his protectionist trade measures.

He said the two sides had also agreed to work together to reform the World Trade Organisation, which Mr Trump has vehemently criticised as being unfair to the US.

Trump said he "opened up Europe for you farmers", to a crowd in Iowa on Thursday.

President Donald Trump is lamenting decades of USA trade policy as he addresses steel workers in IL.

"We agreed today first of all to work together towards zero tariffs, zero non-tariff barriers and zero subsides for the non-auto industrial goods", Trump said.

But the administration's plan is not expected to be a long-term solution if the trade battles continue.

For some trade analysts, the concern was less about the particulars of the Trump-Juncker détente than how Europe plans to deal with Trump, who only recently called the European Union a "trade foe".

Cooler, more comfortable weather on the way

Rep. Andy Barr of Kentucky says he told the White House advisers that Wednesday's announcement "was a positive sign and we appreciate the administration lowering the temperature with the European Union".

The U.S. steel and aluminum tariffs remain in place. But others were wary, wondering whether it's realistic to expect Europe to buy more soybeans from the United States, as Juncker signaled, or to become "a massive buyer" of liquefied natural gas from the US, as Trump declared.

Trump repeated his call for "reciprocal" trade.

The two sides agreed to hold off on further tariffs during negotiations, he said. "It means that they are competitive", Trump told Glor.

Trump had threatened large tariffs on European cars.

Trump also took to Twitter to comment on the meeting.

Trump has also imposed tariffs on $34 billion of Chinese imports - a figure he has threatened to raise to $500 billion - in a dispute over Beijing's aggressive drive to supplant USA technological dominance.

On another front, Trump's administration has hit even its close allies the European Union, Canada and Mexico with levies on steel and aluminum exports to the United States, prompting retaliation against iconic U.S. products including bourbon whisky and orange juice.
