States suing Trump administration, company over 3D guns

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo testifies before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Capitol Hill in Washington

The complaint is not yet available to the public but Ferguson's office says the Second Amendment Foundation and Defense Distributed will be named in the lawsuit as "necessary parties".

The guns produced on 3D printers are made nearly entirely out of ABS plastic, the same material used to make Lego bricks.

They're untraceable and there's no background check required.

Had officials not gone to court to try to block downloads in the state, Shapiro said in a statement, "the harm to Pennsylvanians would have been immediate and irreversible". "We have laws in place to keep people safe, & during a time when students aren't safe in their own classrooms, we need more help - not less".

Eight states filed suit Monday to block a pro-gun group from distributing files online for making firearms with 3D printers.

As of August 1st, Americans will be able to post and find plans for 3D printable guns online.

Ferguson is blaming the Trump administration for giving unsafe people access to guns. "These downloadable guns are unregistered and very hard to detect, even with metal detectors, and will be available to anyone regardless of age, mental health or criminal history".

Washington State Attorney General Bob Ferguson announced the lawsuit Monday morning, with Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Oregon, Maryland, New York and the District of Columbia signing on.

Prosecutors have at least 12 recordings by Trump lawyer Cohen
Lanny Davis, an attorney for Cohen, posted on Twitter that Trump and his legal team had waived the privilege claim. David Pecker, the chairman of parent company American Media Inc (AMI), is Trump's friend.

In the lawsuit filed Monday, the attorneys general claimed that this "temporary modification" violates the Administrative Procedure Act because, the states claim, "there is no indication in the Settlement Agreement (or elsewhere) that any analysis, study or determination was made by the Government Defendants, in consultation with other agencies, before the Government agreed to remove" the files from Category I of the US munitions list.

"As a result of the Department of State's settlement with Defense Distributed, terrorists, criminals, and individuals seeking to do harm would have unfettered access to print and manufacture unsafe firearms", the attorneys general wrote.

"This is part of the Trump Derangement Syndrome".

Earlier Monday, a coalition of 21 state attorneys general sent a letter to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Attorney General Jeff Sessions urging them to withdraw from the settlement. "This has nothing to do with President Trump", Gottlieb said. "If people have the ability to download these guns arbitrarily, the danger to the public is going to be huge", Best said.

"If there were a terrorist and criminal rights organization, they'd be cheering today", said Jenny Durkan, mayor of Seattle.

Security experts fear that the guns could evade metal detectors used in public buildings and airports. So the guns would be detectable.

"Basically, these 3D guns would enable people to construct these firearms in their garages". And something like that would cost about a quarter of a million dollars.
