Indonesian geological agency: Tsunami warning after 7.0 M natural disaster off Lombok island

Tsunami warning after 7.0 earthquake strikes near Indonesia's Bali

CNN quoted National Disaster Management Agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho saying that 689 people were trapped on and around the 3,726 meter (12,224 ft) mountain following the shallow 6.4-magnitude quake that struck Sunday morning.

Indonesia's disaster mitigation agency said the quake, which struck at a depth of 15km, prompted a tsunami warning.

Najmul Akhyar, district chief of North Lombok, told MetroTV that there was an electrical blackout so he was unable to assess the entire situation, but that at least three people had been killed.

Last week, a magnitude 6.4 quake hit Lombok killing 16 people. No casualties have been reported so far.

The quake caused light damage as far away as the Javanese city of Bandung, some 955 km from Mataram, but was felt strongly on the neighbouring resort island of Bali.

There is a "potential" for a tsunami following the natural disaster, according to Indonesia's Tsunami Early Warning System.

The Thai embassy in Jarkata said on its Facebook account that there have been no reports of Thais being injured in the quake.

Iwan Asmara, an official from the disaster mitigation agency, said residents were fleeing from their homes in a panic to move to higher ground.
