Trump attacks Sessions, suggests DOJ hurt GOP in midterms

'Good job Jeff': Trump blames Sessions as GOP lawmakers charged before midterms

President Trump lashed out at Attorney General Jeff Sessions in a string of tweets on Monday, accusing him of hurting Republican chances in the upcoming midterm elections with a series of Justice Department investigations.

In his latest comments undermining the Justice Department's traditional independence, Mr Trump tweeted that "Obama era investigations, of two very popular Republican Congressmen were brought to a well publicised charge, just ahead of the Mid-Terms, by the Jeff Sessions Justice Department". The two were the first members of Congress to endorse Trump after he announced his bid for president in 2015, at a time when few others did.

Collins was charged with 13 counts of securities fraud, wire fraud and making false statements related to an alleged insider trading scheme. The Dems all hated him, wanted him out, thought he was disgusting - UNTIL I FIRED HIM!

The two first Republicans to endorse Trump in the Republican presidential primaries were indicted on separate charges - Rep. Duncan Hunter of California for spending campaign funds for personal expenses and Rep. Chris Collins of NY on insider trading.

Under long-standing Justice Department custom, prosecutors generally avoid public disclosure of overt investigative steps involving a candidate for office or election matters within 60 days of an election.

That has left the attorney general's position seeming tenuous at best, though Trump recently told Bloomberg News that Sessions was safe, at least until after the November mid-term elections.

The Justice Department declined to comment on the President's tweets.

Hunter was charged with using more than $250,000 in campaign funds for personal expenses, including family vacations, school tuition, and theater tickets.

Aretha Franklin's fans say goodbye
The two-day public event precedes her funeral on Friday, but fans will have lasting memories of her one of her final looks. The pop star then called for the lights to be cut and a moment of silence before adding, "We love you Aretha ".

Both lawmakers have pleaded not guilty.

Republican congressional leadership considered the charges serious enough to move to strip both men of their committee assignments. Fox News has reached out to the White House for additional clarification, and the Justice Department did not immediately respond.

Trump pointed to the popularity of the two men who faced an easy re-election before being indicted.

Collins has suspended his reelection campaign, while Hunter is running for reelection, alleging political bias by the Justice Department.

Mr Trump suggested Mr Sessions could lose his job in July a year ago when he said "time will tell" what happens to him.

Trump's tweet drew a scolding from Sen.

The Hunter investigation began in June 2016, according to the indictment.
