'Very strong' typhoon Jebi on course to hit Japan

Super Typhoon Jebi Is the typhoon strengthening? Will it make landfall in Japan

High waves triggered by the storm was seen in the Kochi Prefecture in western Japan this morning as the country faces strong winds and heavy rain into Wednesday. The authorities have already issued evacuation orders for Osaka, Kyoto, Nara, Hyogo, Kagawa, Ehime, and Wakayama prefectures in the southwest of the country, with government spokesman Yoshihide Suga urging the public to "evacuate early".

Typhoon Jebi, heading north, was forecast to make landfall later in the day and cross the main island of Honshu.

Tens of thousands of buildings have been left without power, with more than 700 flights cancelled along with scores of train and ferry services.

Typhoon Jebi is the latest of several extreme weather events to affect Japan.

Japan's Meteorological Agency says residents of areas that may be hit by a powerful typhoon should take safety precautions and be ready to evacuate quickly.

Weather forecaster Ryuta Kurora described the typhoon as "very strong", adding: "This is (the strongest) since 1993".

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) said "Typhoon Jebi" could first make landfall in the Shikoku region on Tuesday, but has said that those in a wide area across the archipelago should be on high alert for strong winds, torrential downpours, high waves, floods and landslides.

Jebi would follow Typhoon Cimaron, which made landfall on August 23 and disrupted transport but went easy on injuries and property damage. Schools in the affected areas have also been shut indefinitely.

The Shinkansen bullet train was operating on a reduced schedule and Universal Studios Japan, a popular amusement park near Osaka, was closed.

As much as 150 millimeters of rain may fall in some regions in western, eastern and central Japan through Tuesday morning, the agency said.

Japan is regularly struck by major storms during the summer and autumn.

The country has been sweating through a record, deadly heatwave that was preceded by record rainfall in parts of western and central Japan that killed over 200 people.

More than 175,000 people lost power in western Japan, according to the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry said, while more than a million people were advised to leave their homes by the Fire and Disaster Management Agency said.

The flooding and landslides proved so deadly in part because many people did not heed evacuation warnings, which are not mandatory.
