While Rubio was talking, Jones approached him and accused him of ignoring the plight of his website after its page got deleted from several major social media platforms because it alleged, among other things, that the 2012 Sandy Hook school shooting was a "hoax". CNN even provided Dorsey with a list of seven tweets that violated the site's terms of use, and yet only now is Jones finally banned, after there could be no way for Twitter to talk its way around letting him remain on the platform.

The company said Jones won't be able to create new accounts on Twitter or take over any existing ones.

The video in question showed Jones shouting at and berating the CNN journalist Oliver Darcy for about 10 minutes in between two congressional hearings, which were focused on social media companies and their filtering of fake users, accusations of political bias, and abusive content.

Infowars and Jones' accounts were also banned from Periscope, which is owned by Twitter. Previous violations also contributed to the decision to ban both accounts.

On Wednesday, before confronting Rubio, Jones held a freewheeling gaggle with reporters outside the Senate hearing room where Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg and Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey were set to testify. Some of the parents of the victims have sued Jones for mental and emotional distress.

The exchange became heated once Jones touched Rubio's shoulder, which prompted Rubio to say, 'Hey, don't touch me again, man'.

The Justice Department statement appeared to escalate a war between the administration and Silicon Valley after a series of attacks by President Trump claiming tech firms were biased against conservatives.

Twitter's first punishment was minor compared to the repercussions that Jones and InfoWars faced from other tech companies just days before.

While he began broadcasting his shows in 1999, Jones' profile has spread from the far-right fringe in recent years.

He continues by saying Darcy 'smiles like a possum that crawled out of the rear end of a dead cow'.

"I know you've got to cover them, but you give these guys way too much attention", Rubio told reporters on Capitol Hill.
