Nadal vs del Potro, Djokovic vs Nishikori in US Open semis

Rafael Nadal will face Juan Martin del Potro in the US Open semi-final

Nadal had had his right knee taped during his gruelling third-round clash against Karen Khachanov but insisted afterwards it was not a big issue and he appeared in good shape for his next two matches.

Although Nadal has the edge when it comes to head-to-head meetings, all five of Del Potro's victories have come on hard courts where his flat forehands are at their most effective and he will look to utilise that weapon as much as possible.

"Of course, it's not the best way to win a match", said del Potro, who hugged Nadal when it was over.

"It's not a tennis match when one is playing and the other is at the side of the court".

"I hate to retire, but to stay one more set out there, playing like this, would be too much for me", Nadal said.

The defending champion retired down two sets against del Potro with an ailing knee. "I know what is going on with the knee". In 2017, Nadal won his first Slams in three years (the French and U.S. Opens), then won his 11th French Open this year.

Del Potro, a man far too familiar with his body letting him down, is probably the last person who would have wanted to progress in such a manner but surely no player deserves a kind break more.

Two Reuters journalists jailed for seven years over Rohingya investigation
Some of the reporters' supporters shouted "let them speak" and jostled with police as they were driven back to prison. The UN's resident and humanitarian co-ordinator in Myanmar Knut Ostby also condemned the incident.

Djokovic entered the day with a 13-match winning streak against Nishikori. Nishikori beat the Czech in their rematch in the quarter-finals this time. "I don't know. I would give slight advantage to Rafa, but I feel it's going to be a great match".

The third seed will now await the victor of the second semi-final between Japan's Kei Nishikori and Serbia's Novak Djokovic.

After edging a 69-minute set, Del Potro applied pressure early in the second, thundering winners off both wings to get to 15-40 in game two. He even barely took any time between points while serving - and he's known as one of the slowest guys on tour.

This one, given the added difficulty created by unusually high heat and humidity, would certainly be meaningful.

After fearing his career was over following a trio of operations to his injured left wrist, which forced him to miss the best part of two years, the 29-year-old returned and rebuilt his game. Certainly, the market has made a big adjustment on predicted pricing, and I'm not at all convinced that it should do to this extent. Against Djokovic, del Potro is 4-14 in his career, including 0-3 in majors.

This is my favourite tournament, my biggest memories on a tennis court came on this court in 2009.
