Trump mocks light sentence for George Papadopoulos

An orange shirt saying

He is the first former campaign aide to be sentenced in special counsel Robert Mueller's Russian Federation investigation.

The DNC's revelation came in court filings Friday in their lawsuit against Russian Federation, the Trump campaign and WikiLeaks for interfering in the 2016 presidential election.

Then speaking directly to Papadopoulos, Moss said: "I know the sentence is painful to you I'm sure you're wondering what case what comes next", and that he was impressed by his words to the judge.

The professor told Papadopoulos the Russians had "dirt" on Mr Trump's Democratic presidential rival Hillary Clinton in the form of "thousands of emails".

He is the first former campaign aide to be sentenced in special counsel Robert Mueller's Russian Federation investigation.

As part of his sentence, Papadopoulos also will have one year of court supervision, 200 hours of community service and was fined $9,500. They said his sentence should reflect that "lying to federal investigators has real consequences, especially where the defendant lied to investigators about critical facts in an investigation of national importance". However by lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, he placed "self interest over the national interest", Moss said.

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on Friday ahead of the sentencing, Trump played down his relationship with Papadopoulos.

Papadopoulos's attorney, Thomas M. Breen, went further, saying "the President of the United States hindered this investigation more than George Papadopoulos ever could", by calling the investigation fake news and a witch hunt.

Steven Gerrard goes after the referee following defeat to Celtic
Steven Gerrard suffered his first disappointment as Rangers manager in the "Old Firm" derby at Celtic Park on Sunday afternoon. I think everyone gave their all today and that is all you can ask for. 'He was clear and categorically said "no".

Prosecutors sought a sentence of up to six months, while defence lawyers asked for probation.

Papadopoulos was the first to plead guilty in Mueller's probe.

Papadopoulos, 31, pleaded guilty in October 2017 to a charge of making false statements to investigators about his contacts with Russian Federation.

Defense counsel in their filings painted Papadopoulos as a naive and eager campaign aid who sought to impress the Trump campaign by setting up a meeting with campaign officials and Russian Federation to discuss whatever Russian Federation allegedly had on Ms. Clinton. The Justice Department has spent at least $17 million investigating Russian meddling, but government estimates have shown that Mueller's team specifically has only spent about $7.7 million. "I can't guarantee. All I can say is, my memory is telling me that I never shared it with anyone on the campaign".

Papadopoulos' attorney asked for probation. But he said he was moved by what he viewed as Mr. Papadopoulos's "genuine remorse".

"We were hoping for no jail time but two weeks is OK", Maria Stamatopoulos said.

Papadopoulos brought the idea up at a campaign meeting with Trump and future Attorney General Jeff Sessions, with Sessions later testifying before Congress that he had "pushed back" against the idea.

"It was at best begrudging efforts to cooperate and we don't think they were substantial or significant in any regard", he said.
