Amazon again puts disaster relief efforts in motion as Hurricane Florence set to punish Carolina coast

Florence's nighttime winds were down to 115 miles per hour (185 kph) from a high of 140 miles per hour (225 kph), and the Category 4 storm fell to a Category 3, with a further slow weakening expected as the storm nears the coast. "It's called Mother Nature, you never know, but we know", he also said in a video posted to Twitter Wednesday morning. "Take all necessary actions to protect life and property from rising water and the potential for other risky conditions".

"Unfortunately, Hurricane Florence is setting out to be a devastating event to the Carolinas, and potentially Virginia as well". Its maximum sustained winds are expected to top 145 miles per hour before losing some steam near the coast.

Officials say Hurricane Florence is likely to make landfall in southeastern North Carolina near the SC border.

As of Tuesday, about 1.7 million people in North and SC and Virginia were under warnings to evacuate the coast, and hurricane watches and warnings extended across an area with about 5.4 million residents. Pastides announced via Twitter on Wednesday morning that the university had canceled classes at least through Saturday.

The hurricane is expected to dump heavy rain throughout the region and FEMA officials said it's not just a coastal problem. The National Hurricane Center says it's now expected to hit Wilmington and then veer west, taking it south of Charlotte. So as you can see, they're forecasting a major landfalling storm - Category 3 or 4 storm at landfall.

Florence weakens to a tropical storm
This is likely due to wind shear , or strong opposing winds whipping over that portion of the Atlantic that can tear storms apart. Both are forecast to become named tropical storms or hurricanes within the next two days, the hurricane center predicts.

No storm watches or warnings are in effect for Georgia. "Failure to take action will likely result in serious injury or loss of life".

"Protection of life is the absolute highest priority", he added. "Be ready to move to the safest place inside your shelter if necessary".

"Whether or not the game could have been played, we made the decision we think is best for the state and those who are evacuating the coast", athletics director Ray Tanner said in a statement released by the school. "It's the most deadly part of the hurricane that comes in - it causes the most amount of destruction". Trump also approved a federal emergency declaration for Virginia.

He noted that emergency services may be pulled out of high-risk areas ahead of Hurricane Florence's landfall due to the severe risk posed to emergency responders. It will be arriving soon.

"In Florida, we are fortunate to have the best emergency management professionals in the world to respond to disasters in our state and to help other states during times of emergency", Scott said in a statement.
