Serena Williams umpire Carlos Ramos breaks his silence about US Open

While winding up a tour of Asia with Under Armour, he was asked about Serena Williams's meltdown when an incident with the chair umpire escalated during the U.S. Open women's championship Saturday.

This is said to be because the CEO of the Women's Tennis Association (WTA), Steve Simon, and the U.S. Tennis Association President Katrina Adams, had released statements in support of Serena. Williams was later given a violation for smashing her racket, costing her a point.

Carlos Ramos, the umpire at the center of the storm surrounding Serena Williams at the U.S. Open, was "thrown under a bus" by tennis' governing bodies, says a former top-level umpire.

"There's no one more experienced, no one more knowledgeable, no one more capable as an umpire than Carlos Ramos".

They're not pleased with Williams or what they see as a lack of support from the tennis world for chair umpire Carlos Ramos, who was on the receiving end of a heated outburst from the 23-time Grand Slam champion.

Another unusual thing to come out of this whole furore is Ramos' low pay - former top umpire Richard Ings tweeted that the Portuguese would've earned only $450 (about R6 788) for the final, which is the standard daily rate of the US Tennis Association...

Ramos, however, could have prevented the affair had he communicated better and given Williams a "soft warning" instead of a code violation when he saw her coach Patrick Mouratoglou giving signals during the match, King said. She called Ramos a "liar" and a "thief" and later accused him of sexism.

Harry Kane rages at referee as Spain puncture England's feel-good factor
Asked if England can close the gap to that elite before the next European Championships, Southgate said: "Very hard to say". After the break, Luke Shaw departed the pitch on a stretcher after a terrible collision with Dani Carvajal .

"The umpiring fraternity is thoroughly disturbed at being abandoned by the WTA", Richard Ings, a retired, elite Gold Badge umpire told ESPN.com on Tuesday. Players get upset on court, players get code violations on court.

"There are other examples of sexism in sport whether it comes down to prize money, the way male players are treated in comparison to women", she said.

It took two days for the International Tennis Federation to stick up for Ramos, saying he acted with "integrity". He accepted the charge later but added that he didn't think Williams looked at her.

Ramos spoke very briefly about the US Open women's final to Tribuna Expresso in his native Portugal.

"The point is he [Ramos] aggravated the situation, instead of saying "I'm not attacking your character", which is the most important thing he could have said". It's a delicate situation, but "à la carte" arbitration does not exist.
