Amazon's Jeff Bezos pledges £2bn to help deprived families

Jeff Bezos of Amazon speaks at the Bush Centers Forum on Leadership in Dallas

Jeff Bezos, the world's richest person, is launching a $2 billion fund to help homeless families and create a network of non-profit preschools in low-income communities.

The fund will be split between Day 1 Families Fund and Day 1 Academies Fund.

Some resorted to the same argument as US President Donald Trump, who has attacked Amazon for not paying enough taxes and using US postal office as its "delivery boy".

Earlier this month, US Democratic senator Bernie Sanders proposed a bill in Congress called the "Stop BEZOS" Act, which would make large corporations pay workers more or pay for public assistance programs such as Medicaid. Since March 2016, Amazon customers have also been able to order items from the Mary's Place's wishlist on the site, such as diapers and socks. "Most important of those will be genuine, intense customer obsession".

Mr Bezos solicited ideas on Twitter a year ago for ways to donate some of his wealth. At the time, he said he was interested in projects that address urgent need but also produce lasting impact.

While he has financially supported cancer research and scholarships for immigrants, among other causes, Mr Bezos has primarily devoted his fortune to his Blue Origin rocket company, which he described on Thursday as an "investment in the future of our planet through the development of foundational space infrastructure".

Olivia Newton-John Diagnosed With Cancer for 3rd Time
The courageous beauty says she doesn't spend any time feeling sorry for herself, and is aware of how lucky she has been in life. Last year, she was forced to cancel her tour after learning she had "breast cancer that [had] metastasised to the sacrum".

Bezos's philanthropic push, devised with wife MacKenzie, will include building and operating a network of "Montessori-like" preschools to help prevent low-income family children from falling behind in their education.

So, Jeff, from one member of the human species to another, I implore you to not only engage in philanthropy but also try to understand how you can fix Amazon's problems to set a better example.

Bezos said Trump and other public figures should expect public and media scrutiny, which he called "healthy". When discussing his charity work with the homeless and schools for children, Bezos said, "All of his best decisions have been made with heart and by trusting gut and instinct as opposed to just analysis".

Demonising the media and calling them "the enemies of the people" is unsafe, Bezos said. We're going to be obsessively, compulsively focused on the child.

With a personal fortune of US$163.8 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, the Amazon chief executive officer had been largely invisible in the world of philanthropy.

"Another way we're raising awareness is through our special #GoGold boxes - you may receive one during September", he added.
