California Sets Goal to Utilize 100% Renewable Energy by 2045

The new law gives California the most far-reaching clean energy goals of any US state, along with Hawaii, which set a similar target in 2015 of 100 percent carbon-free electricity by 2045. "But it must be done", Brown said at a signing ceremony in Sacramento.

California has set a goal of phasing out electricity produced by fossil fuels by 2045 under legislation signed Monday by Gov. For example, last month Southern California Edison (SCE) submitted its Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) that highlighted the significant role of energy storage in achieving the state's electricity sector greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction goals by 2030.

The twin actions Monday were created to be a drastic opening gesture by the governor, just before he will host a meeting of global leaders on the issue in San Francisco later this week.

About 26.9% of the state's generation now comes from hydro, with 26.9% from renewables and 43.3% from natural gas.

The legislation also marks the latest conflict between California and President Trump, with the state repeatedly defying the administration's policies on everything from energy to civil rights to immigration.

But Brown cautioned that reducing emissions enough to meet the Paris goal of capping global warming below two degrees Celsius (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit) remains a daunting task.

"Today California sends an unmistakable message to the nation and the world: Regardless of who occupies the White House, California will always lead on climate change", state Sen.

He says California is doing the opposite of the federal government when it comes to climate policy.

Of course, there's always the possibly of a shocking "One more thing", but true shocks are no longer easy for Apple to pull off. The rumour-mill has said the names for these smartphones could be the iPhone XS , the iPhone XS Plus or Max, and the iPhone XC.

Without referring to Trump, Brown said Monday that climate change was an "existential threat", adding, "No matter what the naysayers may say, it is a real and present danger to California and to the people of the world". Kevin de León, a Los Angeles Democrat who carried SB 100, said.

JERRY BROWN: California has been doing stuff most of the world is just hoping they might get to someday.

California is doing a pretty good job of flying the flag for renewable energy in the USA, as the state has just announced it will aim to bolster its climate targets.

Brown is preparing to host a global climate summit in San Francisco on Wednesday.

California follows the example set by Hawaii, which set the same 2045 goal in 2015.

Opponents also noted that transportation - mostly gasoline and diesel fuel burned by cars and trucks - generates 41 percent of the state's greenhouse gas emissions, more than double the 16 percent that power plants produce.

As an interim step toward the goal of 100 percent renewables, the bill would increase California's clean energy goal to 60 percent by 2030. "Planning needs to start now to allow a smooth transition to a 100% clean electricity system, avoiding stranded investments and driving better outcomes for families and businesses across California".
