Instagram’s founders are leaving the company

Kevin Systrom CEO and co-founder of Instagram

The New York Times notes that the departures call into question what Instagram's future will look like during an already rocky time for parent Facebook, which bought the company in 2012.

Systrom's statement suggests an amicable departure, but anonymous sources have told Bloomberg that their decision stemmed from tensions with Facebook's CEO Mark Zuckerberg, who had become more reliant on Instagram as part of his future plans.

Systrom said in a statement on Monday that he and Krieger are "ready for our next chapter" that includes "building new things".

Systrom and Krieger apparently plan to take some time off after leaving Facebook, though what follows that is unclear. They clearly want to build something new, but it "requires that we step back".

Against those problems, Instagram has been one of the jewels of Facebook.

No explanation was given for their sudden departure from the photo-sharing network they founded in 2010. Facebook's stock hit a precipitous decline in July after an earnings report indicated it had grown so big it was struggling to find new users, and the last few months haven't seen a rebound.

With the tech heavyweight's backing, Instagram continued its spectacular growth, adding features including videos, stories and, most recently, its own version of TV. Instagram, which now has more than a billion users, is a key driver of revenue for Facebook.

There are reports that Mr Systrom had sought to maintain Instagram's independence and that this trickled down to make staff on Facebook and Instagram less inclined to be collaborative.

WhatsApp co-founder Jan Koum earlier this year also left Facebook, which bought the smartphone messaging service for $19 billion.

Years earlier, Koum said he would take a stand against Facebook if the company's push to increase profits demanded radical changes in the way Whatsapp operates.

Instagram's co-founders are leaving the firm.

The exit of Systrom and Krieger, who have led the rapid growth of Instagram under Facebook's ownership, is a "notable negative" for Facebook, CFRA Research analyst Scott Kessler wrote in a research note Tuesday.

Concerns over the fallout of the Cambridge Analytica privacy scandal and signals that a rise in costs would hurt Facebook's margins for years, fueled the biggest one-day wipeout in USA stock market history in July.

Fellow WhatsApp creator Brian Acton departed in November previous year with a more pointed message, which he demonstrated by donating $US50 million to a rival messaging app. In the past two years, Facebook has been facing a serious crisis in its 14-year history, the reason is not taking the user data seriously and negligence towards foreign interference across its network of more than 2 billion people.
