Teenager Shaw's debut ton puts India on top

Indian cricketers during a training session ahead of the first Test against West Indies

Prithvi Shaw created history on Thursday by becoming the youngest Indian cricketer to score a century on debut as they slammed 134 off 154 balls on Day 1 of the first Test match against West Indies in Rajkot.

The opposition attack was far from threatening but due credit must be given to Shaw, who batted like a seasoned campaigner in his first match for India.

India: Virat Kohli (c), KL Rahul, Prithvi Shaw, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane, Rishabh Pant (wk), Ravindra Jadeja, R Ashwin, Kuldeep Yadav, Umesh Yadav, Mohamed Shami. And the 18-year old batsman lived up to the expectations of everyone with a maiden hundred on his debut.

It happened when captain Virat Kohli was batting in the middle.

There was no shortage of excitement on the first day of the Rajkot Test even though India were playing against a team ranked far low in the worldwide list. Roach will be absent as he has flown back to attend a family issue and the lack of top-quality spinners is a cause for concern.

Prithvi Shaw scored at better than a run a ball before lunch on his test debut in Rajkot. With the tour of Australia just a month away, the team looks determined to get into the match simulation, but then, with Rajkot simmering at 39 degrees, it needs to be seen how the wicket would eventually behave over the next five days.

India's Prithvi Shaw celebrates after scoring fifty runs on the first day of the first cricket test against West Indies. "Looking at the World Cup I think these things are very important to consider, to give players ample rest and opportunity to train well and come back stronger". When the West Indies played their last Test series in India, it was the famous farewell series for Sachin Tendulkar. The marathon partnership was finally broken in the 43rd over when Lewis got rid of Pujara for 86, his innings studded with 14 fours.
