Senate confirms Brett Kavanaugh to US Supreme Court

Police officers lead several protesters away from Flake's office Friday after the Senate cloture vote

"I applaud and congratulate the U.S. Senate for confirming our GREAT NOMINEE, Judge Brett Kavanaugh, to the United States Supreme Court", Trump wrote.

By a vote of 50-48, the Senate gave a lifetime job to Kavanaugh, 53, after weeks of fierce debate over sexual violence, privilege and alcohol abuse that convulsed the nation just weeks before congressional elections on November 6.

Kavanaugh's confirmation leaves the Senate traumatized with Republicans and Democrats as estranged as at any time in recent memory, reflecting the cavernous divides in the country itself during a presidency that has ignited rare political passions.

Trump, seeking a legacy as the president who put a strongly conservative stamp on the court, said on Saturday before the vote that Kavanaugh would do "great, great" job there. Kavanaugh has denied the accusations.

"Millions of Americans, millions of women are watching us today", said New York Sen. "You have a gut sense of things", Pirro said to Trump. "All the sympathy I'm seeing right now for Brett Kavanuagh, while she's being mocked, while she's being demeaned", he said. Yet, we have studied the result of seven Federal Bureau of Investigation inquiries - which have found no evidence of misconduct. "We must always remember that it is when passions are most inflamed that fairness is most in jeopardy". But protesters overran the barricades and defiantly claimed the Capitol steps. Another 101 protesters were arrested Friday, the U.S. Capitol Police said.

The dramatic Senate floor announcement by perhaps the chamber's most moderate Republican ended most of the suspense over a tortuous, election-season battle that had left Kavanaugh's fate in doubt for almost a month after the first accusation against him.

Getty Joe Manchin voted to advance the Kavanaugh nomination to a full vote and limit debate. "And my heart goes out to anyone who has experienced any type of sexual assault in their life".

Trump went on to say: "One of the reasons I chose him is because there's nobody with a squeaky-clean past like Brett Kavanaugh because he is an outstanding person and I'm very honoured to have chosen him".

Has Theresa May promised to end austerity?
United Kingdom correspondent Rod Liddle told Mike Hosking Theresa May has most of her Cabinet and Conservative Party behind her. In a message to voters tired of belt-tightening, the PM said: "Because you made sacrifices, there are better days ahead".

Republicans control the Senate by a meager 51-49 margin. The pair will not change the outcome of the vote.

Three female GOP senators - Iowa's Jodi Ernst, West Virginia's Shelley Moore Capito and Mississippi's Cindy Hyde-Smith - sat directly behind Collins as she spoke.

Trump nominated Neil Gorsuch, seen as solidly conservative, to the court shortly after he took office in January 2017. A few Democrats sat stone-faced nearby.

Like Mr. Trump, senators at the Capitol predicted voters would react strongly by defeating the other party's candidates in next month's congressional elections. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, who told reporters that while she believes Kavanaugh is "a good man", she also felt the confirmation process had become about something "bigger than a nominee". "And that is hard".

Murkowski announced Friday that she would be pairing her vote with Daines as a professional courtesy and a gesture of goodwill. Vice President Mike Pence presided, his potential tie-breaking vote unnecessary. "The United States Senate confirmed a unsafe and deeply flawed nominee only by breaking all the rules".

The climactic 50-48 roll call capped a fight that seized national conversation in the USA after claims emerged that he had sexually assaulted women three decades ago allegations he emphatically denied. But Democratic leader Chuck Schumer of NY forecast gains for his party instead. That reflected Democrats' lasting umbrage over Republicans' 2016 refusal to even consider Merrick Garland, Obama's nominee to replace the late Antonin Scalia.

Leo, who will return later this month to his role overseeing the Federalist Society, said he thinks that every one of the nine seats is "equally important" but that he realized the Powell-Kennedy-Kavanaugh slot is a "historic seat" for its pivot point on the ideological tilt of the court. "I'm also concerned about the impact on the court".

The college professor told the Senate Judiciary Committee she was "100 percent" certain that Kavanaugh tried to sexually assault her at a high school party in 1982.
