Brett Kavanaugh Sworn In As Newest Supreme Court Justice

Watch live: Final Senate vote on Kavanaugh nomination

After months of contentious battles on Capitol Hill, which included numerous last-minute and unsubstantiated allegations of sexual misconduct, the USA senate approved Kavnauagh's nomination in a narrow vote Saturday that fell down party lines. She then voted to advance Kavanaugh's nomination and has said that she will vote yes on Kavanaugh' during the full Senate's confirmation vote on Saturday.

Protesters were also heard shouting from the Senate gallery during the roll call.

Judge Brett Kavanaugh on Saturday was confirmed to the U.S. Supreme Court on a final vote of 50 to 48.

The path to Kavanaugh's confirmation cleared on Friday when two wavering Republicans, Susan Collins of ME and Jeff Flake of Arizona, said they would vote for Kavanaugh after concluding that Ford's allegations, voiced by her in an emotional hearing last week, could not be corroborated.

"The sergeant-at-arms will restore order in the gallery", the presiding officer, Vice President Mike Pence, said several times.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) scheduled the Kavanaugh vote before the FBI investigation had concluded, leading critics to allege Republicans used the investigation as cover to advance a deeply flawed nominee rather than a good faith investigation into credible allegations of assault against Kavanaugh.

His ascent to the Supreme Court was thrown into doubt last week after university research psychologist Christine Blasey Ford testified that he had sexually assaulted her at a Washington area gathering in the early 1980s.

Kavanaugh had been accused by three women of sexual misconduct while he was in high school and college more than 30 years ago - charges he angrily denied.

Joe Manchin, facing a tough re-election race next month in a state that Mr Trump won in 2016 by a landslide, was the sole Democrat to vote for Mr Kavanaugh.

CAIR said it has witnessed an unprecedented spike in bigotry targeting American Muslims, immigrants and members of other minority groups since the election of Donald Trump as president.

Beyond the close vote, the impact on the court's decisions going forward and whatever your opinion of the controversial nominee, Kavanaugh's confirmation fight challenged a number of long-standing norms. As a replacement for Anthony Kennedy, a frequent swing vote on cases dealing with LGBTQ rights, abortion, and affirmative action, Kavanaugh could cause the court to lean more conservative on these issues.

"The President nominated a jurist who has been described by legal peers of all political stripes as a superstar", McConnell said, later adding that "Judge Brett Kavanaugh is among the very best our nation has to offer".

Without weighing in on the sexual assault allegations that Ford leveled against Kavanaugh, Mrs. Trump says victims of "any kind of abuse or violence" must be helped.

The upper house is split 51-49 in favour of the Republicans and the vote was largely along party lines.

"He will make a superb Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States". "I would say if we're talking about the Supreme Court and Judge Kavanaugh, I think he's highly qualified for the Supreme Court", Mrs. Trump said while speaking to reporters in Egypt during a solo worldwide trip to Africa. Ford had been asking for an Federal Bureau of Investigation inquiry into Kavanaugh since she came forward with her allegations.

Centrist Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski refused to cast a "yes" vote, but called out "present" instead of "no" so fellow Republican Steve Daines of Montana could skip the roll call and walk his daughter down the aisle on her wedding day.

Pointing to television footage of protesters outside the Capitol, he said their numbers paled in comparison to the thousands of supporters awaiting him in Kansas.

'This is one of the reasons I chose him is because there is no one with a squeaky clean past like Brett Kavanaugh. U.S. Capitol Police began arresting some of them.

Sen. John Cornyn of Texas said, "The Senate has been an embarrassment".

The attorneys also again addressed controversy over Ford's supposed reluctance to let the Judiciary Committee interview her in California.
