Google's Leaked Reasons for Not Announcing Mass User Data Breach

Google Plus

According to The Journal, Google discovered the data breach in March this year and, although the bug has since been patched, the company decided not to disclose the news for fear of "immediate regulatory interest" and potential reputational damage.

In the Google+ incident, which the Wall Street Journal claims was kept hidden to avoid a regulatory backlash, users' details including names, dates of birth, relationship data, employers and job titles were potentially available to developers with access to its APIs.

Google was mired in its very own privacy scandal on Monday when The Wall Street Journal revealed that it exposed personal profile data of around 500,000 Google+ users - and then made a decision to not let people know.

The internal memo obtained by the Journal says that while Google has no evidence that outside developers misused, it has no way to know for sure.

Google+ was launched in June, 2011 as a way to compete with other social networks such as Facebook.

Cambridge Analytica, a data firm with ties to President Donald Trump's campaign, accessed information from as many as 87 million Facebook users without their knowledge. "Given these challenges and the very low usage of the consumer version of Google+, we chose to sunset the consumer version of Google+". "This is a direct result of the scrutiny that Facebook dealt with regarding the Cambridge Analytica scandal".

"The bug meant that apps also had access to Profile fields that were shared with the user, but not marked as public", Google's vice-president of engineering, Ben Smith wrote. CEO Sundar Pichai was also briefed, the Journal reported.

Dana White Just Shared Some Major Conor McGregor News
In April, McGregor came to Lobov's defence when his colleague was confronted by Nurmagomedov in Brooklyn. The Brazilian reciprocated the complement, telling ESPN : " let's go do this for the fans ".

Facebook's chief operating officer and Twitter's chief executive testified at the hearing, where an empty chair was pointedly left for Google after the committee rejected Google's top lawyer as a witness. Despite this, they still plan to shut down Google+, providing people the next ten months to migrate their personal information.

Meanwhile, the company said it was unable to confirm which accounts were affected by the bug it discovered, but an analysis indicated it could have been as many as 500,000 Google+ accounts.

As many as 438 outside apps may have connected with the flawed software.

Google claims there was no evidence of misuse of the data.

If you use the service for work, though, Google+ is not going anywhere.

Unfortunately, whether you've forgotten about it or not, if you have a Google+ account, your data may have been put at risk.

Play Store apps will no longer be allowed to access text message and call logs unless they are the default calling or texting app on a user's device or have an exception from Google.
