Google+ gets the axe after exposing users’ private info

International Regulators Begin Investigation into Google’s Data Breach

The company, however, can not confirm which users were affected by the bug when it was active from 2015 to 2018. Google was hammered again a month later, when the Associated Press revealed the company was tracking users' locations even after they'd turned off their phones' location history setting.

The announcement in this regard was made by Ben Smith, Google Fellow and vice-president of engineering, in a blog post Monday, in which he noted that the Indian-American headed company could not confirm which users were impacted by the bug.

A Google spokesperson cited "significant challenges in creating and maintaining a successful Google+ that meets consumers" expectations" along with "very low usage' as the reasons for the move.

"However, we ran a detailed analysis over the two weeks prior to patching the bug, and from that analysis, the profiles of up to 500,000 Google+ accounts were potentially affected".

For Google, a data privacy reckoning may finally come as a result of a service that it admits nearly no one uses much anymore.

The Wall Street Journal broke the news of the software bug, reporting that Google chose to not disclose the problem "because of fears that doing so would draw regulatory scrutiny and cause reputational damage".

"'We have many enterprise customers who are finding great value in using Google+ within their companies", the internet firm said.

Mental health crisis could cost the world $16 trillion by 2030
The government must start various campaigns in order to make people aware of the causes of mental and how they ought to treat it. A new report will be published into the state of young people's mental health every year on World Mental Health Day , it said.

These latest changes are also being implemented as part of a larger crackdown, in which the search giant is seeking to review and curb "third-party developer access to Google account and Android device data and of our philosophy around apps' data access".

Android data access is being restricted to app developers. "Whenever user data may have been affected, we go beyond our legal requirements and apply several criteria focused on our users in determining whether to provide notice". The company does say that it found no evidence to show that any developer was aware of the bug or that any profile data was misued.

Data is limited to static, optional Google+ Profile fields including name, email address, occupation, gender and age.

Google said it found no evidence of data misuse.

More information will be available over the coming months, including ways that users can download and migrate their data.
