Saudi journalist disappearance ruffles feathers in Washington

Jamal Khashoggi's fianc

The US has been under increased pressure to demand answers from Saudi Arabia, a longtime US ally in the Middle East, as to Khashoggi's disappearance.

People hold signs at the Embassy of Saudi Arabia during a protest about the disappearance of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, Oct. 10, 2018, in Washington.

Saudi Arabia says the allegations are baseless.

The two Turkish sources told Reuters that Turkish authorities believe Khashoggi was deliberately killed inside the consulate, a view echoed by one of Erdogan's advisers, Yasin Aktay, who is a friend of the Saudi journalist.

Everything is very clear and Turkish police as well as the Istanbul Public Prosecutor's Office and security services are doing their best to put all the details of the disappearance together.

Mr Erdogan, who said he was personally following the case, added that Turkey had no documents or evidence at hand regarding the case.

As a contributor to the Post, Khashoggi has written extensively about Saudi Arabia, including criticizing its war in Yemen, its recent diplomatic spat with Canada and its arrest of women's rights activists after the lifting of a ban on women driving.

US President Donald Trump and European leaders all have called on Riyadh to explain what happened to the 59-year-old journalist. US Senator Bob Corker, the head of the Senate Foreign relations Committee, said on Wednesday that he was told by Saudi officials that the consulate security cameras only relayed live footage and did not record.

Why Tesla Inc. Stock Took a Hit Friday
It's also worth noting that, just three minutes after Musk's tweet, Tesla stock prices fell by another 2%. It is worth noting Musk had said he expected Tesla would be profitable from the third quarter onward.

The Washington Post reported Wednesday evening that United States intelligence intercepts outlined a Saudi plan to detain Mr Khashoggi.

On Monday Turkey asked for permission to search Saudi Arabia's consulate for Khashoggi.

"We call for cooperation between Turkey and Saudi Arabia to conduct a prompt and impartial investigation into the circumstances of Mr Khashoggi's disappearance and to make the findings public", United Nations human rights spokeswoman Ravina Shamdasani told a Geneva news briefing.

Trump expressed reservations about withholding arms sales to Saudi Arabia. We know in the very near future.

What's next: Erdogan's statement today suggests he is not keen on escalating tensions with Saudi Arabia - at least for now - and that Ankara is inclined to await the official outcome of the probe into Khashoggi's disappearance before making a decisive diplomatic move. We see it in Syria, we see it in Egypt, we see it in other ones.

Turkey summoned the Saudi ambassador on Sunday to request the kingdom's "full cooperation" in the investigation, a Foreign Ministry official said. Saudi officials said that he left shortly after, but his fiancée, who was waiting for him outside the building, said he had not come out.

While the Saudis have denied the accusations, an official with Turkey's AK Party told CNN Turk (the Turkish outlet of the American media agency), that there was evidence proving that Riyadh was involved in the alleged assassination.
