Report PS4 Messaging Bug is Bricking Consoles

Reddit reports suggest PS4 owners are receiving a message that contains indecipherable characters that are causing their console to stop functioning, and requiring a factory reset to regain functionality. The stories all follow a similar pattern: users receive a message, their controllers and sound outputs fail, and resetting the console results in continual error loops.

Option 5 in Safe Mode is that Data Rebuild, described as "Scans the drive and creates a new database of all content on the system".

If you're playing a game right now on your PlayStation 4 - or will be soon - drop everything and make sure no one but your friends can privately message you.

We've seen weird messaging bugs creep into the smartphone space over the last couple of years but it looks like this issue is starting to affect consoles too. Even deleting the message from the mobile app doesn't work. The bug, in some instances, has been used during matches to cause the opposing team to crash and be unable to complete a match.

Turkey Releases U.S. Pastor After Two Years In Prison
Treasury Secretary Stephen Mnuchin said at the time that the U.S. was prepared to add more sanctions if Brunson wasn't released. Mrs Brunson said: "The vice president contacted Norrine [Andrew's wife] and the White House has left a message on our phone".

According to the reports, which were earlier cited by HotHardware, some people said the only fix for the problem was to factory reset their console.

Even scarier, others are experiencing the glitch simply by receiving the notification for the message. This is done through the account management and privacy settings menus.

Reddit user u/Huntstark explains that the only way to prevent the malicious messages is to set you privacy settings to "Friends Only" or "No One", preventing random accounts sending messages.

In a statement to VG247, Sony revealed that it is "aware of the situation" and the company is in the midst of planning a system update to fix it.
