Pentagon Sends 5200 Active Duty Troops to U.S.-Mexico Border

Central American migrants try to force their way through a customs gate at the border bridge connecting Guatemala and Mexico in Tecun Uman

The troop deployment, one week before the U.S. midterm elections, appears to be the largest U.S. active-duty mobilization along the U.S. -Mexico boundary in decades and amounts to a significant militarization of American border security.

Under current protocol, migrants who clear an initial screening are often released until their cases are decided in immigration court, which can take several years.

Reports say several thousand Honduran migrants moved last week through Guatemala, and some were trying to cross to Mexico local media said. Their role - helping to protect South-Western borders and border officers.

Anyway, blocking the progress of the train of unemployed "migrants" is only a temporary measure apparently, AP reported: "A standoff unfolded as federal police officers blocked the highway, saying there was an operation underway to stop the caravan".

A second USA official said there will be active duty troops along the border as part of this mission as early as Tuesday.

"Please go back", the president tweeted Monday.

The 5,239 troops approved for the mission - more than double the number of US service members deployed to Syria - will join approximately 2,100 National Guard troops deployed to the borders of Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas on a similar security mission since last April.

McAleenan said 1,900 asylum-seekers are picked up at US border crossings a day, many of whom put themselves in the hands of violent human smugglers.

"Border security is national security", General Terrence O'Shaughnessy, head of U.S. Northern Command, told reporters Monday.

Glen Hoddle in hospital after falling ill at BT Sport studio
In statements, England manager Gareth Southgate and Football Association chairman Greg Clarke both sent their best wishes. Hoddle played 53 times for England and also coached team from 1996-99, handing David Beckham his worldwide debut.

Last week, he ordered thousands of troops to the border after declaring the caravan a national emergency.

Caravan spokesman Alexander Martinez said that all except about 300 members of the group chose to remain in the town and resume their journey on Monday morning while they organise safety and security committees.

"Many Gang Members and some very bad people are mixed into the Caravan heading to our Southern Border", Mr Trump tweeted.

On Sunday, one migrant died after he was hit with a rubber bullet when Mexican federal police rebuffed another group of migrants who tried to enter the country over the global bridge.

Mexico routinely complains about the treatment of its own citizens living in the USA without the proper papers, but has been detaining and deporting Central Americans in large numbers since 2014.

Under the Posse Comitatus Act, federal troops are mostly prohibited from engaging in domestic law enforcement activities.

At least 1,895 have applied for refugee status in Mexico, and hundreds of others have accepted assisted returns to their country of origin.

On Monday he warned that the military would be waiting. In the Mexican border town of Ciudad Hidalgo, they said they hoped to continue onward early Tuesday morning. The troops expected to be sent to the border will primarily consist of military police and engineers, but the military also reportedly plans to send Marines. US officials have told Reuters the support mission would be coordinated by the USA military's Northern Command. The caravan arrived in sufficient numbers to eventually overwhelm the border security forces around the bridge and make it into Mexico.
